So I managed to find a job. It is a really good one and to make the deal even sweeter we wound up finishing out trip at my old job. I don't think flying a bigger airplane makes you a better person but it was pretty nice walking off the aircraft and saying hi to the line crew that I'm still very good friends with. I could go on about how all of the employees that I used to work with were very happy to see me and ask how things are going. To make a long story short I wound up offering to buy drinks at the local and spoke with some of my friends about how my employment at my former job was terminated. It turns out that things were a lot worse than I thought. I was told that the aircraft I flew, a KA200 was going bye bye and that was the reason for my lay off. It turns out that this wasn't the case at all.

My first few weeks of unemployment were a nightmare. I had no idea what to do and to make matters worse when I ran the tail number of my old airplane I saw that it was flying, a lot. It made me wonder what was going on and I realized that there was a lot more to the story. It turns out that my backup pilot got a DUI that was why I never got any time off. To make matters worse the DO, the CP and the dispatcher all lied to me about it. They told me that this pilot was always busy or "had a project." I heard this if I needed to go to the dentist or the doctor or drink a beer. They told me that I had coverage on the airplane but they never ever gave me one day off. To make matters even worse they still had the pilot who had a DUI flying with me. Even if I was fatigued or sick I still had to fly as PIC. He would act as the SIC only required for insurance. I don't know the legality of that.

Well after at least a month of never having one day off I broke and didn't make a flight because of a scheduling SNAFU. Well that exposed the pilot with the DUI. So all hell broke loose. Basically I got fired but I got the DO to call it getting "laid off" and got a pretty solid letter of rec. It was a tough way to get treated after being at the company for 5 years. The sad thing is is that they had told me what was going on I would have tried to help out. I'm not a rat.

Now that I found out what really happened I am seeing red. Not only did they have me flying with a guy with a DUI but they lied to me about my schedule and why I couldn't get a day off for at least a month. I saw the CP at the OAK airport today. I was seeing red. I wanted to walk over and pop him in the mouth but I have better things to do with my life. He kept looking at my airplane and then looking away. I thought that was pretty funny. I do however feel like I am sitting at the end of a bridge to nowhere. A bridge soaked in gasoline, a lighter in my hand. I keep flicking the lighter, click, click, click. Tonight, I want to go to the FAA and tell them about everything I know in hopes that I can do as much damage as possible. I'm not sure how I will feel tomorrow.

What would you do? Go to the FAA? Would my old employer even get in trouble? Is it worth it? Would there be any repercussions? I know really pulled the rabbit out of the hat flying a great airplane for a great company. I don't want to risk my new job. I also know someone from my old job could be reading this but I don't care. I hope your shaking in your boots.

you need a light?

J/K

Man that sounds pretty low. Why would they let you go, when the other guy was the one who blew the positive? Doesn't really compute, except to say that maybe the new gig is better, and you may not have been available for it had things turned out another way?

As far as revenge, I have a lighter that could torch someone from my past as well, but I never lit it. Just live and pay it forward, and let the natural progression take effect.

-afterthought-
I might check out the legalities and whether or not other dude had a medical, and possibly file an ASAP if there is an issue in the FAR's.

I'm not personally too worried about filing an ASAP. I have some pretty good emails that would keep me well clear of trouble. It does upset me thought that I could have been put in this position by my former employer.

then it's probably a good thing that you had the opportunity to move on to a better gig!

I am glad you found something better man. I haven't been in a legality situatuon like that but I know how getting crap pulled behind your back feels. KARMA IS REAL!!! and it will all come back to bite them in the ass if it hasn't already... When we look back on life it all makes sense. Would this new job flying a bigger airplane have presented itself like it did if you hadn't been laid off! KUDOS to you my friend.

All I can say is... Don't ever work in south FL, as that kind of behavior is pretty normal down here.

Forget the Feds and move on with your life. Take solace in the fact that you're no longer there, and will be much better off in the long run.

Kudos for getting the better job. You may have had suspicions about who you worked for, but now you know.
You are better off now, and would just leave it at that. Not much good will come of flicking that lighter.
I assume you were single pilot qualified or the drunk still had a legal medical.

The company you worked for viewed you as a means to the end, and not an asset. That has to hurt, but learn from it. That is really the case (to varying degrees) anywhere. You're not even till you cash the last weeks paycheck, and the cycle starts over for the next week.

But if you feel the other way, revenge is best served cold. Make them PAY!!!!! :)

Or North FL for that matter. Apparently crap like that happens a lot. My old 135 compny constantly pulled illegal stuff that put our certificates on the line. One of the pilots that got fired illegally obtained a lawyer and had a pretty solid case to sue but when it came down to how much money the company had the answer was none. So the lawyer said it wasnt even worth it. They could sue and win for how much ever money they wanted but if the company was broke, they wouldnt even get enough money to pay the lawyer fees. As for action with the FAA, I could have taken some as well but just walked away from the situation and was able to find something better. Dont know what to tell you on that one.

Dave, congrats on getting a new gig.

I wouldn't burn the bridge. Aviation is a small world and you never know when having that story in your back pocket may come in handy.

You guys are right. It is a small world. One of the aspects of my termination that I didn't mention that really pisses me off is the fact that the owner of the aircraft was likely lied to as well. He paid for my training and I'm not sure what my former employer told him when I was terminated. So it is another thing to consider. Most of these aircraft owners hang out at the same places: golf clubs, yacht harbors etc. It would be a real shame if my name was blacklisted due to a lie. I plan on staying in the area and you never know what the future may bring. My name may come up for future employment with the same aircraft owner, possibly on a bigger airplane.

Just move on. No sense in kicking a beehive.

This, and what others have said. Glad to hear you've moved on to something a lot better. But given how small the aviation world is, it might not be worth burning that bridge unless they do something now to burn you. Lies will catch up with people, as for the DUI thing with the other pilot - definitely let that go. It's up to him and the FAA to sort that mess out, and I'm sure he's paying out the nose for it in other ways. For example, he'll probably have a hard time getting flight work at another company should the current gig go belly up, which it sounds like there is a good chance it might.

Sorry you got hurt by folks you trusted but turned out to be liars. You have the right to feel betrayed. What did they write in your PRIA? To me, let it go except find out what they wrote. They already lied to you...check it yourself. Visit the old CP office and examine their copy.

Do not call the FAA. Poo runs downhill, what you gonna do when/if the investigation reveals you got some poo on you too? The investigation you initiated....

In all honesty I feel bad for him. He got fired too. I mean, he was a total dickhead and treated me like but as I always say "there by the grace of god go I". He is married to the dispatcher. The dispatcher's father owns part of the company. So there you go. The dispatcher is even worse than the DUI guy. She treated me like crap for five years. One of the other captains and I still can't figure that one out. My captain buddy doesn't know why they were always trash talking me and treating me like dirt.

Good lord, what a bunch of (choose your explicative)s. Again, glad to hear you got something better. Word will get around about these places, and all you have to do is tell the truth about what went on and let karma work it's magic.

I am confused about why you were upset about flying with a guy with a DUI. As long as he sent his notification of the DUI to the FAA within the time limits they wont do anything to him if its his first. As long as he still had a valid pilots licenses and a medical I dont see the issue here.

I wasn't upset about flying with someone who had a DUI. It was pretty obvious looking back at it. It was funny flying with this guy because our max amounts for dinner went out the window. I turned in some BIG meal receipts. I got to drink a lot. When I was flying with someone else or single pilot things changed pretty fast. The double standard was obvious but that didn't piss me off it was such a crap company and I had been treated like crap for so long it just seemed normal. One thing that did bum me out about the impressive bar tabs that DUI guy would come up with was: when I asked to repo the aircraft the night before so I didn't have to wake up at 2am for a 6am (safety issue IMHO) off of another airport they would deny it and say that they didn't want to spend the money. Yet our DUI champ was still rockin 200$ plus bar tabs.

What I was upset about is that I needed to go to the dentist and had several other day off requests during the DUI time frame. The dispatcher the DO and the CP all lied about it and said well you can't have a day off because DUI guy was busy or had "a project." If I told DUI guy I was fatigued he wouldn't fly the leg but wouldn't tell me why. He was such a jerk that I didn't realize it may have been a legal issue.

Basically I'm mad because they lied about the DUI and it impacted me in a lot of ways. It caused the scheduling SNAFU that got me basically fired. I flew the entire summer with NO time off. Even if I was fatigued I would still have to fly every leg and clean the airplane etc. I hope that clears things up for you.

You don't owe this company anything. The 'burning a bridge' argument is a null point in my book. If this company is that shady, what else are they doing?
Move on and don't look back if you want. Or blow the whistle. It's what you can live with that really oughta matter in the end.

Granted, I'm not adverse to burning a bridge if it keeps a pack of zombies on the other side of the river and away from the rest of the world. Granted, I'm the guy that basically called in repeated napalm strikes on a former employer as a part of a larger plan. Will that bite me in the ass someday? Maybe.. but it's a call I made and I don't regret it. I hear that the pilots at that company just got a great new contract. I wonder if the leverage the negative publicity provided might've helped? I think it might have.

Your call. Nobody would think less of you either way. Glad you got out before it got really twisted.
