Sequence for Landing

I was doing pattern with a Student when i was told "follow traffic at a intersection". I responded "roger looking to traffic to follow" I then saw traffic on short and final, I said i had traffic in sight. So the Controller came back and said " NUMBER 2 clear to land". So i have one aircraft on short and final so i was number 2. I turned base then i cut off the aircraft that i was supposed to follow.

I called tower and the tower said i was number two following the cadet. He informed me that when he said numer two following the cadet that i could be the 7th in line but the second following that type of aircraft.

Is this right? if so/not please help me find the information of how this is supposed to work.

That seems a little strange to me. When I clear someone to land "Number 2," then they are the 2nd airplane to that runway.

That makes no sense. If 7 people in the pattern are all following the person in front of them then all of them are #2 cleared to land. Weird.

30 years of ATC and thats dont make any sence to me either.

No kiddin'!!

It was all I could do to remember what order the numbers were supposed to be in (well, above five or seven, anyway)... nevermind delineating it all by different types of aircraft. Never heard of such, but that doesn't mean it isn't so now.

From this and some other topics here (e.g. this one), it looks to me like the folks that are doing the flying today have their hands full educating the "new" controller workforce.

Too bad the powers that be de-emphasized jumpseat rides, fam trips and things like Operation Raincheck.
