I tried to search the forums but could not find much on this topic, maybe someone else is better at searching than I am ?

My current gig has given me much more down time at home and on the road which is great. However, I am now looking for something to do in these slow periods to make some extra cash and also have a little something to fall back on if I find myself out of work in the future.

I have a business degree from 5 years ago that I have never used, never had any huge desire to anyway. Id love to gain some sort of additional skill set. I try to use my CFI when I can, but I dont like to take on full time students as I cant provide the same level of service that the full time guys can. I end up doing the occasional BFR or Acro flight, fairly infrequently.

What are people on this board doing in addition to their flying jobs ?

When I worked side jobs, I was a personal fitness trainer, EMT, in the Army National Guard, and weekend jump pilot. I'd also take classes on subjects that interest me at the local community college.
However, I have learned that staying at home and being a father and husband is much more important and rewarding than any of those. If you have a family, spend time with them, they won't always be around. Get a side job later, the little cash isn't worth the precious time you could be spending with your family.

Good Point and I totally agree about spending time with family. However, I dont have any children, and my wife works during the week. Dropping jumpers sounds fun though...maybe Ill get my skydiving license!

You an Ironman waver? My wife did Ironman Florida last year. A bunch of her friends are getting ready for Ironman Louisville next weekend. I've done an olympic distance myself.

Something just occured to me...how about getting my A&P! Any of you guys done this? I think it would be a great way to advance my career, and increase my employment opportunities should I find myself looking for work.

Mur....tri's are where its at!

I thought about trying to do this, but the requirements are way beyond the down time I have. Specifically the time requirements.

Try bartending. Money is not bad, and you get to meet some good people. Thats how i got into the flying job i have now.

Did you make any money being a personal trainer. I just ordered the NSCA textbook to start studying. When I get the extra money I might even take the test. I was wondering because some of the trainers here at the gym I work at make very good money. I know one trainer makes close to six figures (he's been doing it for 15 years).

Yeah, I didn't do too bad, not six figures, but a little extra income. It was more of a hobby, but I had some regular clients and I also helped out at the YMCA now and then as well. I'm thinking of getting back into it in about a year or so, but not sure how realistic of a goal that is right now as I am dealing with some serious personal issues that might not permit me to do it ever again.

:yeahthat: I would LOVE to have an A&P, but I work dayshift and nobody offers A&P training at night.

Real Estate would be a great choice, even though its so slow out there right now.

Also, look into taking your Series 7 and doing something in the financial sector, lots of part time opportunities there.

I'm flight instructing right now but looking into both of these as possible side gigs. I also have a business degree (finance, UCF) that I don't use with my current job.
