People aren't joining the military for economic reasons. Without any college or ROTC type credits - you're looking at about $23k a year for the privilege of early reveille and the the comforts of a tent in the FOB or 5,000 roommates on a carrier. Meanwhile, you can sell underboob sweat on TikTok for $500 per "unit", or if you suffer from anhidrosis - sell your farts in a Mason jar and make $100,000 a month.
Unless someone has an itch that can't be scratched in civilian life (fighter pilot, Ranger, tanks) today's youth are seeking other opportunities that don't require all those pesky commitments of service.
