Put me in the Scott bag crowd. I initially went the route of a cheap bag... and it gave out during a driving rain storm on the ramp in ATL. Look up "suck" in the dictionary and you will probably see a picture of me on that day.
There are things to skimp on. Socks. Underwear. Cotton t-shirts. There are things to pay a little extra for quality because failure can really suck. Shoes. Sunglasses. Flight bag. I backed over my Scott flight bag and it still is great.
Remember, it is not the cost of an item that matters, but the cost per use. I have a pair of LL Bean boots I bought at the age of 18 for the princely sum of $70. I still have them. If you figure the cost of those boots per time worn they are the cheapest clothing I ever purchased.
