School Counselor looking for help

Dear Professionals,

I am a school counselor in rural upstate NY. A large part of my time is spent trying to find ways to help at-risk students achieve better academic performance. I am in the initial planning phase of developing a program that would use Internet technology to connect some of my students with professionals/mentors in the "real world".

I'm currently working with a young man, 9th grade that has a career interest in aviation and flying private jets. My goal is to find him a mentor to participate in this new program. The modest and possibly life-changing commitment by a mentor would consist of five 20-minute videoconferences over a five-week period via Skype.

The mentor would currently have a career in the field of the student’s interest and would share their experience and path to that career including the challenges and how those challenges were met. The student would engage the mentor with questions they've prepared independently as well as spontaneous questions as they arise during a session.

You would need a broadband internet connection and a computer equipped with a camera and microphone. I have arranged parental permission for students to participate.

Research shows that a mentor can be the catalyst that directs a student in a positive direction. As little as a single encouraging word or expression of belief can make a world of difference for our students. If you are not the best point of contact please share this email with anyone in your organization that might fit the description above as a suitable mentor for my student. I believe every student is an individual and needs individual attention. Your help could make a world of difference.

Sincerely,

Tim Wojcik

I could possibly help out. I would love to help in fact. However, the problem with flying private jets is that it is next to impossible to schedule anything. There would be some weeks where I would have no reliable way to schedule anything. May be a good experience for someone to see how private aviation can slowly peck away at your life until there is nothing left.

Tim. I have some information for you, but I need an email address or phone number at which to contact you. I sent you a private message yesterday (in your inbox; top right corner of the screen) if you wish to respond to that instead of posting it publicly.

I'm all about helping out younger kids! My background is a bit more diverse than some, but by no means extraordinary. I have lots of General Aviation experience which has led me to my current Corporate/Charter job now. I'd be happy to help out as well. PM me for more information and I'd be happy to share!

Thank you for you willingness to help. I have a commitment from another pilot at this point to work with my student. Praise to all the great aviators that offered their knowledge.

I'm truly impressed by the helpful spirit of this community. I have made a connection for my student in record time. I hope you'll have the opportunity to help a youngster in the future.

Lots of really great people on here who are more than willing to help out I'm sure. We have a truly unique (in the good way) group of people on this forum.

Stick around aviation for a few months and you'll see that it's not a rare thing. We may bitch and moan about day to day life at our jobs, but when the cards are down, we're there for each other...and the community.

What part of upstate NY are you located? I have access to an airplane in Otsego County that if the timing worked out, I would be more than willing to take your student up for a flight.
