School Career Day

Definitely spend some time going over the GOM and OpSpecs! They’ll totally dig that!

I think 5/6 graders are entering the period where they like to be cool and think they have inside knowledge about stuff. Maybe explain to them a few things that they wouldn’t otherwise know about, like why crew can bypass security, or what you’re doing while passengers are unloading, or how you get ride reports from ATC so you can warn them about turbulence, or what can happen when they don’t have their seatbelt on during turbulence, or how you can talk to a doctor in flight if there’s a medical emergency. Try to give them some “inside scoop” so they feel special.

Nice try ISIS. ;)

I focused on the neat things I have seen. Here is a picture of Fata Morgana, it is a mirage that makes it look like things like mountains are upside down. As a bush pilot in Alaska I saw a herd of about 5000 caribou, it was like national geographic meets the lion king. Here is a picture of one of the runways we landed on. Yes Billy you have a question? Yes it is falling into the river, but it isn't in there yet so we are good. Here is a picture of a plane breaking the sound barrier. Anyone know why it makes that white sheet? Yea me neither but it sure does look cool. This is what a wingtip vortex does to a cloud and this is why.

Bring it to their level and make it interesting. As long as you do it with some passion it will get to them.

I don't remember where I read it, but saw something somewhere that kids that were raised with touch screen/electronic toys are entering school and have trouble holding pencils because their hand muscles never developed much.
You know I game a little bit myself and I'm sure when I have kids I'll be buying the new tech stuff. That being said, I'm very cautious about how much time kids are playing games and hand injuries such as pinched nerves, gamers thumb, carpal tunnel, etc.

I think people don't think about the long term effect of gaming so much. I'm a young guy so I get it. When I was little I still played sports, went outside, did all that jazz. Even in high school/college it wasn't uncommon to hangout with friends and have a FIFA or NHL tournament where you're having fun, talking smack, etc if plans fail, weather is bad, or you're just too broke to do anything.

It's just the amount of hours and the addiction to gaming that scares me. That can be said about phone usage and this is for guys or girls. Sometimes I'm guilty of it just sitting on the couch "watching" TV but just on my phone the whole time.
