Saw the Green Flash @ 15,000'!

No it's not Superman's cousin, it's a real atmospheric phenomenon! I've heard about it on occasion over the years, but never saw one until this morning. I was over Sandusky, OH at 15,000 right at sunrise this morning...some fog in the area and a low cloud deck on the horizon. Just at the moment the sun broke clear of those clouds, a brilliant green flash of light appeared for a couple of seconds - stunningly beautiful...and they pay me to do this!

Anyway, if anyone's interested here's a link to the wiki on green flashes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_flash

Apparently, I saw the "Mock-mirage flash" variety; its description seems to most match what I saw, and the conditions of the morning.

Anyone else seen one? Maybe they're common for pilots to see, and I'm just not looking hard enough...took me 10 years of flying!

Dude this is creepy. I was flying with a friend about 6-12 months ago and saw this in between TOL and SKY and that I was sleep deprived or hypoxic. Crazy.

that as frickin sweet! were you actively looking and waiting for it to happen.

Awesome! That makes you one of the very few. I've seen in several times. All were at sunset and from sea level at sea. One time the flash was truly a flash, like a camera flash. Another time it was three successive neon green glows.

That is cool, I've actually never heard of those before. I would of though I had a brain tumor or something.

This has to be a conspiracy with Davis Besse. In between TOL and SKY: Davis Besse Nuclear Power Plant. That has to be it. :sarcasm:

Your from NW Ohio, eh? Which aircraft are you flying?

I used to live in Parma, Ohio. Flew out of 15G in Wadsworth. Just would do night flights up to TOL for the hell of it.

I was talking to Mr. Tango up there about the where are you from part..

But that's pretty cool anyways. What kind of plane would you do the flights in?

O' My bad...

Ratty, old, I can't believe this POS is airworthy 172's.

That is a bizarre coincidence. I'm gonna start blaming Besse for everything - green flashes, famine, chemtrails, etc :insane:

Funny, but no, not this time. Occasionally in the past I would actively look, but never saw one so I kinda gave up on it. Wasn't even thinking about it this time - go figure! Just chillin and waiting to enjoy what was looking to be a nice sunrise...but I knew what it was the instant it happened!

Yeah, apparently they are all a little bit different, and virtually impossible to predict exactly when and where it may occur - too many variables. Glad I finally got to see one - but now I'll probably be obsessed (and therefore never see one again! :))

Flying and managing a Malibu Matrix, corporate. Definitely bigger and faster birds out there, but it's fun to fly, the owners are fantastic, and QOL can't be beat! Pay ain't bad, either

Be on the lookout for certain atmospheric conditions to increase your chances.

You officially suck.

What you saw son was swap gas reflecting the image of Venus. Now look over here while I administer an eye exam. ;)

Ahhh...it's good to suck for a change!

Is the plane based out of 1G0?

Yep, that's the one.

Ohhhh...so that's what the flash was...and that explains the guy in the black suit in the back :)
