No it's not Superman's cousin, it's a real atmospheric phenomenon! I've heard about it on occasion over the years, but never saw one until this morning. I was over Sandusky, OH at 15,000 right at sunrise this morning...some fog in the area and a low cloud deck on the horizon. Just at the moment the sun broke clear of those clouds, a brilliant green flash of light appeared for a couple of seconds - stunningly beautiful...and they pay me to do this!
Anyway, if anyone's interested here's a link to the wiki on green flashes:

Apparently, I saw the "Mock-mirage flash" variety; its description seems to most match what I saw, and the conditions of the morning.
Anyone else seen one? Maybe they're common for pilots to see, and I'm just not looking hard enough...took me 10 years of flying!
