Save the contract towers

Just stop right there. You're unnecessarily interfering with Democrat Rhetoric 101
While we are on the subject, I am all for paying more in taxes, but before I do I want you to cut the bull POOP that you waste my money on. ( there are many things that both sides want to keep that should be cut).

But seriously, you can research the tax rates of fuel on airlines. its like .04 a gallon, while most corporate and GA aircraft are paying $2 or $3 of that $7 a gallon in taxes. Last time I was in Ithaca before my crash I got the FBO copy of the fuel receipt rather than mine. It included price per gallon for Jet A. There listed price was over $8 a gallon and United was paying a little over $2. I don't know of any fuel hedging United has done that is that great. Taxes are what make the difference there, and that is an INSANE difference.

When was the last time you flew GA?
Logten pro says 16 months ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. A former student of mine bought an airplane and took me on a flight down the SoCal coast. No we did t hold hands but shoulders were definitely touching. :)

Actually I think the airlines pay less in true TAXES than any other aircraft operator in the country. Less than 4% of the cost of fuel for airlines go towards tax, as opposed to roughly 30% or more of the cost per gallon for corporate and GA aircraft. Airlines have to pay fees for use of the airport but so do GA aircraft in many cases and those fees go towards the airport and local municipalities, not taxes. Ticket taxes? Those are like the sales taxes and are paid directly by the passenger when buying the ticket.

I am very interested in what taxes airlines have to pay that the rest of the aviation community, especially the corporate community doesn't pay.

Excise tax, Security Fee, Passenger Facility Charge.

It is called bulk buying.

Like EAS? Which, if didn't exist, your company would have most likely shut down LOOOOOOOOOOOONG ago.

Yeah, but I never worked for them when they were flying EAS. If they didn't exist I would be working at some other regional right now, its not like Delta airlines wouldn't be around. I think that some EAS routes are useful, but not to near the extent they are flown.

I don't care how much fuel or any other consumable product you buy in bulk, there is no way its going to get you a 300 to 400% discount.

Same things I mentioned in the post you quoted. The Excise tax is paid by the passenger when they buy the ticket, much like sales tax. Security fees and passenger facility charges are just like the landing fees that corporate and GA aircraft have to pay. They are not taxes.
You original post was about taxes and thats what I was disputing. Airlines do not pay a higher percentage in taxes than other GA or corporate sectors of the industry do. They may pay a higher monetary amount but thats because there is a hell of a lot airliners flying around than there are corporate aircraft. They should be paying more.

[quote="jtrain609, post: 2061771, member: 29]Back when I learned how to fly, we didn't have towers (because it was the middle of nowhere), we didn't have radar (because it was the middle of nowhere), we didn't have GPS (because it was 1998 and my flight school was broke), and you know what else we didn't have? Mid air collisions! Because we used our Mk. I eyeballs to see and avoid other traffic. A tower outside of Class C airspace is generally a waste of time.

And I used to walk uphill both ways to and from school in the snow.

John, take Skymates with 100+ students taking a ESL class in the sky, a major ATP base, Cowboy stadium circus, General Motors plant, mix all that with ice cubes of Barons and Bonanzas and you have a KGKY cocktail.

I'm buying you a plane ticket to go do some pattern work the day that tower closes. :)

None of my responses are appropriate for this forum :)

You ever get your house put back together?

Good grief, grow up. We've got thirteen different systems helping us not run in to each other, and we still need some sleepy dude with a pair of binoculars to keep us from swapping paint at West Bumscrew Regional at rush hour? Your grandfather did this stuff without TCAS. a controller OR a radio.

I still don't see specifics about these tax breaks. I need details. In which bill are they contained?

Come on dude. You're smarter than this.

It's called accelerated depreciation, and it's only applicable to aircraft put in service strictly for business use. Wanna jet set to the islands to play for the weekend? No accelerated depreciation for you! Want to use a brand spanking new Lear 45 to shuttle around the middle management to three different job sites in a single day? Congrats, your company gets to take accelerated depre...er, uh...there's your evil "tax break". Right ZapBrannigan?

Matter of fact, it's such a terrible concept, that Mr. "They don't need an extra tax break" signed the Economic Stimulus Bill in 2009, which (GASP!) included provisions for accelerated depreciation for business aircraft. So many rich people took advantage of it, and the economy took such a hard hit, that he signed it again in the Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012.

Oh yeah. Let's not forgot about those airlines that are paying their fair share of taxes get to take advantage of this too.

In other words, you sound like an idiot when you spew that garbage about "tax breaks".

I have a problem that I pay the same registration fee in OH for my 4 seat aircraft that corporate and even 121 planes do that are registered in OH. Yes, it's only $3.75/seat, up to $15. Why not just make the registration cost per seat and look at the additional funding that would be generated!

My CFII and I were discussing this the other day. All but two towers are closing in Atlanta- PDK and ATL. We both couldn't imagine sending a student pilot on a solo cross country to PDK for the first tower XC, especially some of the students I've known. While I'm sure the closing towers around Atlanta will be fine, things will be very different for sure, especially during the busier times and big events.

Yes. Oh God yes. My dog Max, who sometimes eats his own poop, would do better than Obama.
I don't think anyone is saying your dog , who eats his own poop, would do better than Obama. I think the issue here is very specific. It deals with your comment that the rest of aviation needs to pay their fair share of taxes for the system they use, inferring that the airlines are some how placed with the burden of keeping it running. All we are saying is that you are trying to feed us the same bs the airline CEO's and board members like to spew and simply not true. Hell, even though I started in the corporate world, I now fly for an airline and hope to continue my career in the airlines but I still know better than that.

Why not make all towers contract based. The savings would allow the FAA to keep all the towers open, and probably still save money.

Also we could remove the stupid rule requiring more controllers after that LEX crash that was 100% the pilots fault, adding the extra $150k/yr controller was a humongous waste of taxpayer dollars.

Anyone know where I can find a list of the control towers that will be closed?

"SAVE THE CLOCK TOWER!"

I can't believe no one has laughed about that yet. Cause that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread.
