Sat in Doug\'s Seat on Saturday

I sat in Doug's seat on Saturday!

Well sort of...

I was on a BOS - ATL flight on a DL MD88 Saturday afternoon. I went up after the flight and found the Captain, he let me have a seat in the FO's seat while we chatted for about 15 minutes. He was a real nice guy and encouraged me to keep flying!

So that's my story. I guess it was LIKE his seat.

BTW, the Captain's name was Conrad - he was ATL based and had been flying the -88 for 16 years. I mentioned Doug Taylor and he said he may of flown with him, but couldn't recall.

Re: Sat in Doug\'s Seat on Saturday

Nope! Don't know any Conrads!

Re: Sat in Doug\'s Seat on Saturday

Oh okay. But I have to tell you, the -88 kicks some bootay. He showed me the computers and explained the engines. I checked out the 757 here in SAV the same night. And I really like the -88 much more.

Okay I know everyone is entitled to there opinions and all but how could you ever compare a MD-88 or similar to a 757.

And say the MD-88 is the better of the two?

The 757 is a pilots plane everyone who has ever flown it loves it and those that haven't want to.

I have heard here (A300Capt) and in at my previious job ramp agent @ CVG when talking to pilots that the 757 flies as easy as a C-172.

Where as I have heard the MD-88 is bulking/awkward and hard to control and it's auto pilot is completely a$$ backwards.

Not at all saying that the 88 is a horrible plane just don't think it could stack up to a 757.

Better wing, more powerful engines greater range, highly stable it's just no contest.

And before Aloft chimes in no I have flown niether but still entitled to an opinion having frequently talked to pilots of both aircraft.

Please explain okay....

Man, I was just enjoying the notoriety for a few hours!

Actually the 757 kicks the -88 square in the butt.

Just put in a bid this afternoon for LAX 757/767 so we'll see what happens.

Shorter commute, new base, new airplane... maybe it'll dropkick me out of my monotonous malaise!

Re: What!!!! no your kidding me....right???

What's wrong with Atlanta?...I always here people complaining, so i am curious. Also, Doug, what was your last content update on? I do not think it is noted right...it says April 15, but when you click on it it says February 23 and that you added a new perspective article.

Thanks

Conrad's response, "wait, is he about 5 foot 10 inches, middle aged?" lol

Nothing, really. I've only been downtown once, but it's a huge, nameless, faceless pilot base and an awful long ride from PHX.

I know this guy...... he's a friend of my brother's, and he's a Captain too in the Air Force..........he a navigator on those C-3PO [Mike D note: she means C-130, but she has a blond factor in her IQ] planes that fly supplies out to this arctic station at the South Pole....name's Jim something-or-another.........do you know him?"

.

But yea lots closer to home and SWA has like 30 something flights a day to LAX from PHX.

And lets not forget the hometown airline HP.

Your commute should be easy.

Lets us all know if ya get it.

God, Mike, I would have taken that one and been a total smart ass.

"Jim? Yeah, he's a great guy. Hey, remind him to tell you about the time that he and I went on a tear down in the Phillipines before they closed the base down. Close the base down? After Jim and me were done, there was no base left to close down. Just ask him about it."

Matthew --

I am enjoyed the MD-88 more for a reason I'm not really sure. I LOVE the 757, hence my username. I had never been on the -88 before and I really liked it. The 757 blows the -88 away obviously, in pretty much all areas. The only really I can say I enjoyed the -88 more is because the Captain took the time to explain the aircraft and it's capabilities and showed me the computers. I guess it was the gut feeling at the time, but either way they are both freaking cool planes in my opinion.

About asking if the Captain knew Doug --

Yeah, I know it was a stupid question to ask if he knew Doug, but he's ATL-based and he told me he had been flying for 16 years so I figured he might of flown with him, I just thought'd it be neat to hear "yeah! I flew with him last week!" or something..

Actually it wasn't, I was just joshing you

Truthfully, it makes more sense to ask an ATL-based MD-88 captain if he knows Doug.....much like someone asking me if I know other -10 pilots. Since most of the community know each other, or know the names, your question was perfectly reasonable.

Now if you'd asked "there's this guy that flies MD-80s for American, based out of Dallas....his name is"

Re: What!!!! no your kidding me....right???

You know what's funny, is that the 757 kills the MD-88 pilot-wise. But passenger comfort-wise, the 757 is probably the worst aircraft on earth.

I actually don't mind it, if you get the right seats. On UAL, the best seats on the 757 are the ones right by the entrance to the main cabin. The galley is right there, so you can get up and get some water or soda without bugging the crew, and there is plenty of leg room!

Re: What!!!! no your kidding me....right???

Hey Doug, I thought you were based in DFW. anyhow good luck on getting LAX.
