Funny that in some states, EMTs have so little in their protocols that they can do, that ambo driver is essentially what they are. If I remember right, using a pulse ox is considered an advanced skill in some places for EMT-Bs.

Screw the uppity paradise valley people. ;)

@MQAAord is going to cut you.

And I'm not going to stop her because watching those itty bitty hands wield a bowie knife would be just darling!

"Mike! She's trying to murder you! D'awwwwww! Lemme grab my iphone!"

I'm actually not even sure if we (EMT-B) in IN are technically "allowed" to do pulse ox. We all do. But I remember being told "they" (IN state regulation authority) didn't want EMTs relying too much on the sat number as a 'crutch', or focusing too much on it and not watching anything else. At least that was the reasoning... but we all use it.

We just recently were granted the "skill" of being able/allowed to do BGL. Yes, a finger-stick. We had to complete an online training program and do an in-person skills check off in order to become qualified. Crazy.

I may be small, but I'm feisty! :D (And funny you mention the knives.. some people are gun people, me, I'm a knife people.)

We were on the ultimate adventure until we were suddenly confronted with a hideous fire-breathing flying Moist Tarmac. The Moist Tarmac was the most dangerous of all the Tarmacs in the land.

Y'all couldn't do blood sugars until recently? Wow. At least in AZ when I was BLS we could do o2,blood sugar, and assist with MDIs. Pulse oximetry is a good tool, but I did see a lot of EMTs rely too heavily on it so I can kind of see their concern with it. One of my favorite tools as a medic is capnography. Much more reliable than just SPo2 in my opinion.

I would use it as a reference and because the PCR has a block for it. But when we'd be working on contract up on Mt Lemmon at 9000' MSL combined with the individuality of the patient, who knows how accurate it was.

Yep, Indiana is welcomed to the 21st century.

We do use capnography too, and 95% of the time we work as Medic/EMT pairs, so I never got -too- worked up about what Basics can or can't do but it always seemed really backwards that we technically weren't even allowed to use O2 sats. Yes, I do grasp that it shouldn't be used exclusively, but it's a good part of an overall picture.
