Safey pilot question

Can a person with a PPL that is not current (no BFR) act as a safety pilot?

I have heard yes and no from different people so which is it??

According to the regulations, you do not need to be current to act as a safety pilot unless the safety pilot has agreed to act as PIC. You do however have to have a current medical. The Regulations you can find this info is 91.109, 61.51(g), 61.56​
