Sad day.....Two dead in crash at Orland Airport identified

Those that know me know I work and fly out of Chico, and the instructor was a good friend of mine who got me my MEI last year when I first became a JC member. I blanked out the names out of respect.

Two Chicoans are dead in a crash of a small aircraft at the Orland airport this morning. They were identified this afternoon by the Glenn County Sheriff's Office as _________, 70, and XXXXXXX, 58.
-------is an air traffic controller at Chico Municipal Airport. XXX is a well-known local pilot and flight instructor.
-------, the owner of the plane, was reportedly on an annual check flight at the time of the 10:20 a.m. crash, said Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones. Officials said it hasn't yet been determined who was in control of the plane, which may have been attempting to land.
There were no witnesses to the crash, Jones said.
The plane is a hand-built kit aircraft, technically considered an experimental aircraft.

Cause is unknown. I was between fire loads today when my wife and one of my pilots passed the news to me. Her daughter runs the dance studio where my daughter does ballet. In all my years of aviation, this is the closest friend I have yet to lose. RIP and God bless her husband and daughter.

Sorry about the loss of your friend. It's a tough thing to go through.

Condolences.

Surprised though that your closest loss wasn't during your time in the USN, merely by nature of the risk.

As we both know, it won't be the last. It never is, unfortunately.

Statistically, GA flying is the most dangerous flying.

Wait, ATC at Chico? I have a buddy who's a tower controller there/Skywest Employee/Private pilot. This scared me until I read the ages. Sorry to hear about your loss.

Mike you have my condolances...

Losing someone to an aviation accident is never easy, let alone someone you knew well.

Thanks Wes. I think we may do a memorial fly by if we have an aircraft nearby.

Goodness, not a good idead unless y'all have the proper formation proficiency. Don't make a bad thing worse. Maybe I'm over reacting, I've seen the aftermath of this very same thing which you are considering.

My condolences for your loss. My prayers to the families and friends.

I'm thinking he's probably qualified for a flyby.
