?'s for current & former FSA students

Another couple questions FSA types

#1 Will the standard Jepp student pilot bag suffice or should I begin looking for a larger one (w/all the pockets/detachable headphone cases, bells and whistles), etc?

#2 Where do off campus folks like to live? Is Canterbury Place alright?, what ab/Walker Woods?, any other suggestions?

#3. What should I be studying to prepare (I know i should be reviewing everything ...but seriously what is focused on heavily w/in the first few weeks of groundschool)? Airspace, whizwheel, wx or other FlightSafetyisms.

Cheers

FJ

1. nothing fancy needed.

2. don't know, the dorms work for me, and its nice to be in the middle of it all

3. if you really want to study, just read the jepp private pilot manual cover to cover

Canterbury Place is alright from what I hear. I was told to stay away from Walker Woods, they are ghetto. I have heard good things about Pinnacle Grove.

I've got a few questions for anyone familiar with FSA
Still mulling everything over in my mind on the pros/cons of FSA vs PAIFA. Both are great programs from the literature and the tours really highlighted the benefits of both programs.

#1. What's the current student population at FSA? And how many students does each instructor teach at this time? I know it fluctuates but a wag will do. I'm trying to guess how long I'll need to be in Vero Beach to instruct and to get to airline mins.

#2 How's the wx? In the span of a year, do you go more often than not, or do the FL afternoon T-storms hamper training. If its a once in a blue moon canx, let me know, if its a once a week like clockwork thing let me know that too.

#3. Where do you go on long XCs? Is the trip just across the state to Tampa or down to MIA or do you venture out to AL, GA, SC etc? Stories of cool XCs...

#4. And this is really a subjective question, so answer as you see fit... How is the airspace?

I mean is it a busy place (i.e. lot of talking to ATC for clearances, diff types of a/c to watch for (Lears, Citations, Pax carriers, etc) or are you just with other studs and the clouds? I want to get really good at radio calls etc and know that when I fly in busy airspace I tend to be more fluid on the mic whereas when its tooling around FBO with no other traffic except a few other 172s I can be a bit more relaxed.

Thanks for the info...awaiting you replies

FJ

You'll get great multi instrument instruction time.

The WX is great because you get enough clear skies for your visual maneauvers and a good amount of actual IMC for your instrument flying.

You can go across state lines for your x-countries. Georgia is a hot spot for students.

Airspace is good. Plenty of class B around to keep you on your toes.

Bottom line..... great school and great training to airline/military standards...

Good luck...

Walker woods is anything but ghetto.

I've got 2 or 3 buddies who live over there. Pretty nice places if you ask me.
I think I was mistaken, it was wood or woods something....but that is only from what I have heard. I have not personally seen any places around vero except the dorms. I hear it from others so take what I said earlier with a grain of salt.:o

Great, thanks for the info...
OBTW is there any need for a scanner or any other fancy equipment I should acquire b/f starting training?

Yeah, you are thinking of Walker Club, which is kinda ghetto. Walker woods is awesome. I actually live there. I would also suggest checking out other means of living. Real estate is incredibly cheap at the moment. You could get a 4 bedroom house with double the space to rent for the same price as a two bedroom apartment. I am actually in the process of doing that myself with some friends.

The dorms are fine. It makes moving down here simple because they are furnished and don't require a lease. I would say it just depends on your goals and how long you think you may be living down here. I lived on campus when I first moved here and when I met people I moved out. It definatly is nice to get away from campus drama, if you know what I mean. But I would say it's all personal preference. I know plenty of people who are prefectly happy staying on campus, it's a bit more expensive in the long run though. Also keep in mind, that if you plan on instructing at FSI, they will ask you to move off campus when you get hired to make room for incoming students... just FYI.

Anyone know if Veteran's Affair will cover 60% of the ENTIRE cost, or do they pro-rate it out (like over 4 year college), and not expecting to have to pay out a huge lump sum payment after 4 months?
Does FSA help with A. Hiring CFI/CFII themselves or B. Helping with FBO placement to help build up those hours?

Thanks for any feedback!

Here is the most important question ever asked:

What is the male/female ratio of students at FSA?

I heard that women in Vero are usually <14 or >40. So how do you guys retain your sanity?:banghead:

I have a gf back home... (PA)

So it doesnt really bother me.

But thats a partially true dilemma.

It's more of a joke than a reality... but its still kinda true you get alot of the older crowd at the bars.. and the beach is full of 14 yr olds who think they are 20ish.

i would say about 1 girl for every 10 guys would be a safe bet.

I'll jump back in too...do you guys/girls have or keep aircraft rental insurance while in training at FSA? or does the school cover it w/ cost of tuition? Just wondering since I saw Ari-iben student had a mishap or ldg gear malfunxn, whatever this week

Thx
FJ

Reguarding the girl situation in Vero, I almost killed myself the first three months. My g/f and I broke up when I moved down here. Talk about being left high and dry. And be weary of the FSA girls. They're not worth the trouble. Luckily, the dry spell is over:)

I'm seeing a girl from Port St. Lucie. I honestly couldn't believe a girl this hot (and with all of her teeth) existed in this area. She doesn't have any kids either! YAY! LOL
