Rusty...

Hey ya'll... As you know, I lost my job Jan 11 when RIA ceased operations. I was right at the 6 month mark and just started getting into a good groove with dispatching.

Now I'm starting a new job tomorrow, though we won't be fully operational till mid to late April and I probably won't be dispatching until at least late April or beginning of May.

This will be with a whole new software system (new to me) and I'm nervous that I've already begun to forget some of what I learned at RIA. Feeling pretty rusty! All in all, by the time I start dispatching again, it will be almost 5 months since I dispatched last.

Any advice for refreshing my skills/knowledge, other than the obvious (brush up on FAR's and Wx, etc...)?

Don't worry, it will come back to you like you never left but i know where you're coming from. It's been a good 7 years since I've done any dispatching, I'm not so worried about doing it at the desk but I'm worried about the interview. All of these little specific things they might ask me about dispatching that you don't really use on a day-to-day basis are probably totally gone from my brain matter.

You didnt foget it, your routine is what is missing and that is what gives the impression you are losing it.:)

There could be other reasons for losing it as well but I wouldnt know anything about that.;););)

Having to learn a new flight planning system is probably your biggest fear, so once you get past that and get that new routine down, the rest will fall into place.

Learning the first system is almost always the hardest. Once I learned Worldflight and NWA DUI, it made it almost a breeze to learn Sabre dispatch monitor and Sabre DECS.

Most people quickly learn the regs and adjust to new FOMs and AOMs. The one thing that doesnt change are the pilots. Pilots are basically the same everywhere with small quirks unique to each airline. Having worked at three airlines, it amazing how many times I get a call and I feel like ive had this same conversation before.
