Russian Stealth Fighter

what I want to see developed is space tech, like "rods from god." Can you imagine the hurt you could put on an enemy airforce if you could decimate their entire airforce from orbit without a fight. If the technology was good enough you could take them out in flight from orbit.

I got your rods.

About 5 years (at most) we'll hear all about the new flying weapon.

First flight for the F-117 was 1981. That was our first stealth. Russia is only 29 years behind.

Anyway, when Russia copies the F-22 radar wake me up. If it's another 30 years don't wake me up.

Don't poo-poo it too quick. We're talking 3rd to 4th generation stealth technology here, standard Russia taking what we've designed and refining it. 117 was fairly crude 1st generation, though its still fairly effective (with a number of limitations) were it still in service.

My question is where Russia is getting the $$$ to be doing all this R&D.

I just think that if the F-22 has been flying for 2 decades, and it's got superior weapons/technology/flying capabilities ...then there has to be something bigger and better that has only been flying for a few years that we don't know about.

Why, hello there Mr. Men in Black suits.

.

Thing is, the F-22 was never a "black" program. It's competition with the F-23 was fairly in the open. Now, with the 117 flying when it was, to include the slightly-earlier Have Blue jets, we likely are flying "items" that you wouldn't think we were...

Brazil was part of the PAK FA program along with India and Russia, but they're too freakin' cheap and dropped out.

MikeD, do you really think stealth technology, whatever its generation, is gonna matter with these new radar nets?

Its not something we really want to have to depend on, to be honest. Key would be destroying the radar systems before the stealth technology is needed, and with the advancement of cruise missile technology, that ability is more and more accurate from when it was started in Desert Storm. Our stealth technology surely had its limitations, from operational capability to maintainability. It's steadily improved over the decades, but so has the counter technology.

Big Mike I saw some show on the likes of Discovery channel or something a few weeks back. It was about how the military was working on light refracting technology suits akin to the Predator. Which would render it's wearing completely invisible.

Likewise they said they were working on similar technology for planes. (Think Wonder Womens, invisible learjet) Stating that if successful The new technology would make "stealth" obsolete.

Heard about it?

There are all sorts of ideas floating out there for creating the newer better technology. Haven't heard specifically, but it woudn't surprise me that we'd be doing this.

Yeah I guess. Counter stealth technology come SO far and for so little money, while any furthering of stealth is exponentially more costly. Seems like it's time for something new, long range radar imagery combined with very low level high velocity attack aircraft using a live feed. Wait we have that.

I'd like to see more work done on ablative armor seen on Iron Man or Star Trek.

Allow me to be an internet blowhard, but the more I see of the T-50 the less I think it is primarily supposed to be a low-observable aircraft (as is also the case for the F-22).

If you mean it's because the thing is large you've got the wrong impression of Stealth. B2 is big as hell and half the cross section.

Of course the F-22 is the cross section of a steel marble.
