Russian Aircraft

When I was in Iraq, I got to tour an AN-225. In the navigator area, all of the instruments had been removed and there was a single laptop on the desk. Was told it was the primary navigation utilizing moving maps. Ugh.......

idk if it’s true, but supposedly in the early 90’s just after the fall of the Soviet Union thr An-225 had flown into EWR and then was parked on 29 for a couple weeks giving tours for cash to be able to help buy enough gas to get home

I'd give them $5 or $20 for a tour. But if it was Signature at EWR back then, the ramp fees would eat them alive.

There fault for bringing an airplane that eats all the ramp...

Though I suppose if you were enterprising you could park a bunch of light GA underneath the thing and call it “covered parking” charging a premium fee.

fun fact: at least per the Russians, they keep so many tube powered avionics etc in their aircraft because they won’t be affected by an EMP from a nuclear explosion
I miss the soft glow from tube filaments. I even miss the shrink-into-a-black-dot when you turn off a CRT-based television with tubes inside.

As nice as semi-conductors are (and I don't want to go 100% back!), they do have less soul.

This An-12 trundled overhead at 19,000 ft, but it sounded like it was at only 2,000 ft. I wonder if the navigator's position is cold.

It seems to be doing a circuit of San Bernardino - Houston - Managua - ??? - Houston - San Bernardino

seems like a strange route for a Ukrainian cargo outfit.

Haha, Capitalist Stooge Running-Dogs. We use how you say "TECHNOLOGY" against you, yes? Oh, LORAN not so accurate, yes? Degrade GPS signal, yes? WE BUILD BIGGER BOMB! Oh, only boom 2 miles, problem. Not problem, we build bomb that boom 5 miles! And window so if miss, have three bomb more!
...again, if it works, it isn't stupid.

Wife or GF or fantasy woman in that pic? Some things are internationally the same.

She was the first thing I noticed, before the handheld GPS or the windows even. Looks cute, I guess maybe I would not falsify the fuel or nav (we're talking USSR of course) if it meant coming home to her :)

Capt. Vasili Borodin:
I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state. Do they let you do that?

Captain Ramius:
I suppose.

Capt. Vasili Borodin:
No papers?

Captain Ramius:
No papers, state to state.

Capt. Vasili Borodin:
Well then, in winter I will live in... Arizona. Actually, I think I will need two wives.

Captain Ramius:
Oh, at least.

Yep, that was taken at San Bernardino. Tanker 10 in the background.

I stumbled on Sam Chui riding on that airplane’s bigger brother (the one with the contra-rotating blades of death; seriously Ivan y’all crazy) and one of the things that stood out to me was a discussion about how the airplane was life limited, and might only have 1 or 2 more years according to its engineering support.

What, then, replaces these airplanes?

Airplanes may die but Sam Chui is eternal.

I can’t be the only person who gets rabidly angry and wants to know the end of the gawd damned Pavarotti story!
