One of the hallmarks of an effective leader is to train your replacement. You should be doing that with your FOs, especially the NHs. I;m sure there are a bunch of these younger guys who you can delegate the day to day to, and just be the figurehead, with no more pressing schedule than the "Grip and Grin!"
I flew with a captain today who tried to do that... or so I thought. We had a maintenance issue and he had me call MX, talk to the FAs, talk to the passengers, and call dispatch. I was trying to explain to him that while I appreciated the vote of confidence, I'd been doing all of this stuff as a captain (with a whole lot fewer resources to call on) for 6+ years my prior job. Then I noticed he'd just spent the entire time browsing ebay and craigslist on his phone and we wasn't really trying to empower an FO at all.
