This week, I'm doing two back-to-back Romes then a six-day Frankfurt.

These are the pix from the first Rome:

Church, I forget which one...

Some of the old city walls, while waiting for a bus:

Walking the path towards the ancient catacombs:

Waiting for the English-language tour of the catacombs to start, lookie here, it's a vending machine that serves pasta:

And a beer vending machine. Sadly, it was a waste of 2 Euro (nasty beer!)

The entrance. Sorry no other pictures inside because it was verboten:

Various church photos on the walk back to the hotel:

Overlooking the city from the rooftop terrace at the hotel before dinner:

Chillin' on the rooftop:

The Trevistere (SP???) fountain:

Next day, an island on departure, I forget:

The Italian coast near Pisa:

This is hilarious. Here we are, cruising along in flight, the GWPS starts screaming "Traffic Traffic!" "Terrain! Terrain! Caution, Terrain!" then an Aeromexico 767 passes 1000 feet beneath us over the track about 200 miles off the Canadian Coast (CanadianATC you working? :))

And of course, the Youtube video:

The terrace was gorgeous because it offers a panoramic view of Rome, but that Peroni was 6 Euro, which is $9.40 USD which is NOT conducive to a night of debauchery.

Damn...... I could go get a 6-er for that. What about a Euro form of:

Boones_Farm_Strawberry_Hill.jpg

...and yet your planes are somewhat full going over? must be some rich folk making the trips....:panic:

Europeans and non-revs. LOTS and LOTS of Europeans flying to the US for cheap vacations.

Once upon a time, you'd hit the shopping areas, the merchants would spot the Americans and get the "Hoo hoo! We're all gonna get paid!" look on their faces, but now it's like "Step aside and make way for the Belgians, please"

Next day, an island on departure, I forget:

That is Giglio Island (Isola del Giglio). Judging by your position relative to the island, I'd say you were between GISPA and ELB on UL50 during your departure.

By the way, nice photos! They are inspiration.

That's EXACTLY where we were! The captain knows Italy very well and said that name as we were passing over it but I forgot precisely what he said it was.

How come no one uses the term 'aviation junkie'?

junk·ie -noun Informal. - an enthusiastic follower; fan; devotee

I just hate how the word 'geek' sounds. :)

The correct nomenclature is "WhatCHOO"... "WhatCHOO" not "Whatcha" sir.

Just curious Doug, How long is your average layover on those trips?

Most international trips at SJ are three-day trips so, the layover is 24 hours. There are some four-day trips that have 48 hour layovers and there are a few 72 hour ones. I once did a six day Nice, France trip with a 96 hour (four days) layover .

South America trips usually have 33 or 36 hour layovers. At least Sao Paulo does.
