I cannot speak about the Rod Machado book-- I've never looked in it-- but I know from experience that the Jepp books, although extremely informative, aren't overly captivating. I'd say, if you can, go to a pilot shop and read through a little of the different private pilot books-- and pick out the one that works best for you. Another set of books to look at are the one's put out by the FAA-- the Pilots handbook of aeronautical knowledge, aviation weather services and the Airplane flying handbook-- but then you have to buy three books versus one.

The Rod Machado book is not only a great book but also very entertaining to read. I'm not sure if you're looking to become a cfi but I used it a bunch back in the instructing days to help me present subjects to my students. The jepp books are very informative also but a little harder to get through due to the amount of material presented in one paragraph. Have you checked out the William Kershner books? Also good.

Thanks everyone. $25 seems like a good deal for a book. A friend of mine gave me an IFR book he wasn't using anymore and I tried reading it. It will only be useful for my IFR training, won't help with the private.

Funny, just today I picked up and started reading Rod's "Instrument Pilots Survival Manual"... so far the first bunch of pages are pretty interesting.

I saw him at Oshkosh a few years ago and he was in my Cessna "Private Pilot/Cleared for Takeoff" interactive course(which by the way included Rick Rockwell before his claim to fame as the groom in "Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire"), But Rod' was absolutely hilarious at Oshkosh so that sold me on buying the book today!

Its an excellent book, very easy to read. He's good a putting things in laymen's terms. Personally I find his attempts at humor kind of lame, but it dosn't take away from the quality of the information, and even though its corny, it makes it so that you will remember it. Absolutely worth the price. Can't beat $25.

Good book, nice pictures. If it was hard bound, it may last longer for reference. Because of that, I'd also recommend the Jeppesen books. You can find them for VERY cheap on ebay if you just search 'jeppesen' for a couple weeks and watch for one to come up.

Lamer than John & Martha King's? I think not!

I'm interested in more opinions on Machado's Instrument Pilot's Survival Guide. Is it merely supplemental to more indepth study for instrument training or is it adequate preparation for the written?

The Machado book and the Gleim is all you need to prepare for the written IMHO.

Nah, all you need to prepare for the written is the Jeppesen CD.

I wouldn't use the Machado IFR book ALONE to prep for the written. That and the Gleim would do ya, though.

Rod's IFR book is mostly for once you've started your instrument flying... it is mostly a trick book to help you out with the more complicated IFR procedures... almost a complete opposite from his private book, but a successful effort IMO.
