Learning to fly....but I ain't got wings.
Just wondering if anyone has been and what it was like. I'm expecting to go within the next 6 months.

What does your description under your username mean? Rotary-wing is still wings......:)

I went back in 2006. Its a lot of discussion about how not to kill yourself basically. You watch videos and slideshows of crashes. ON day two an A&P talks about maintaining Robinson products. Theres also a factory tour and then your flight with a Robinson test pilot. If possible request to fly with Leo Ball ( Im pretty sure that was his last name) he does a great flight and really shows you how much you can do in a Robbie if you fly it within limits. All in all it was a fun trip and I learned a ton!

It's a Tom Petty song. I know he says "I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings" It's just something I say to my husband...

How much time do you get to fly?

Its around an hour depending on the schedule and pilot. I think I flew 1.3 when I went. We went out over the shipyard on the coast to do some EPs then back to the airport. That shipyard was huge, awesome sight to see!

Oh that's great! Way more time than I expected. I thought the flight would be a half hour or so. The course only costs $400, so I couldn't emagime getting much flight time out of it.

Actually, you could probably say I failed for not recognizing it, as I grew up in the 80s!

It really is a great value for what you get. Its nice to be in a brand new helicopter too! The Beta II I flew had just over 11 hrs on it. I'm not sure if they still do it but if you pack so your bag will fit under the seat in a R-44 they will give you a free shuttle flight to LAX on the last day of the the course. Its cool arriving in style to LAX.

Would you recommend flying the 22 or the 44? If and when I instruct in a RW, it will primarily be in the 22. My goal is to instruct primarily in FW, but who knows what the future holds. I've done EP's in the 22 and the 44 and what a difference between the two. No one was joking when they said "if you can fly a R-22 you can fly just about any helicopter".

It would be pretty cool to be shuttled into LAX, especially as a low time pilot. I'm driving in though, I live only a couple hours away.

I would do it in the R-22 for sure. The 44 is so forgiving compared to the 22. Learning some of the tips and tricks they show you will help you a lot if the 22 is what you will fly more.

Old topic, I know...but, the RSC is not only for CFI's or CFI candidates. All you need is PPL to attend. Though true, that most of the time is it guys/gals who are just completing (or about to complete) their CFI/CFII.

It's been almost 9 months...made it to the course yet?

This is true I am not a CFI and learned A ton about flying Robbies

I made it to the course. There was a good mix of people. Lots from Mexico and a group from Florida. There was a father and daughter that attended together...which is pretty awesome in my book. Overall a very fun trip. The factory tour is really fun and the pilots are fun to fly with too. Beautiful area to fly in, but lots of traffic which at times was distracting.

I would recommend the course to any pilot that flies Robinson's helicopters. PPL is all that is required to take the course, but the course is a requirement for anyone that is going to be a CFI in a Robinson.

Hows everyone's flying lately? Any new adventures?
