RIP indeed.

Takes a brave dude to fly a missile. Serious stuff.

Bravery aside- an experience like that.. air drop from a B-52 and lighting off a rocket.. I'd love to do that, just once.

That was a quick move, Mike. Thanks! I hope others appreciate the post as much as I did and thanks to Orange Anchor for posting!

Customer service is what it's all about here. Good recommendation. And yes, many thanks to OA for the original posting. Like I said earlier, we don't seem to make men like Mr. White anymore; definitely a breed all their own.

Those guys (X-15 pilots) never really saw the credit they deserved. They were flying that thing into space and actually using stick skills to do it. In the meantime the Mercury astronauts got most of the attention from the media. (The Mercury guys earned the attention too, but the press overlooked the dangerous work of the X-15 program.)

A friend sent this quote from the late Scott Crossfield, also an X-15 driver.

"The X-15 is the only airplane I ever flew where I thanked God when the engine quit!"

GREAT quote!

Probably was really hard for these guys to buy pants that could accomodate their huge brass balls.

Check out this video of the X-15 AFTER the Mach 6.7 flight. Probably all 10 toes over the edge...

What it does not show is the cracked windshield. Had to be one helluva ride.
