Return to Field

A captain where I work just had this happen.

Climbing through 6000 feet, departing CLT the FA called up and informed him that a passenger was watching a video on their ipod and had been asked to turn it off multiple times and so far had ignored the instructions. The FA then handed the passenger the "card" (basically a laminated sheet that informs them that they are disobeying a direct order from a flight crewmember and if they continue to do so they will be subject to federal penalties).

According to the FA the passenger never read the card and said "what are you going to do, go back to Charlotte and kick me off?"

The captain thought that was a great idea, so he did.

We (as flight crew) really need to be doing this sort of thing more often.

Kudos to him. I would have made a PA announcement that we are returning to the airport and if the other passengers had any questions or complaints they are welcome to ask the gentleman in 7A.

Through ignoring crew member instructions and causing a return to the airport, this guy cost the airline some money. Can he be billed for this extra cost?

Another example of the pussification of the American male - that no one took it from him and broke it in half.

Captain: "um, base, we have a mainatance issue."

Base: "Go ahead cap'n"

Captain: "Can MX meet us when we return to gate and dislodge an iPod from the lav please?"

:cwm27:

How many pounds of fuel did that waste? Maybe he should be responsible for that cost as well.

They should have just made an announcement that they were returning to XYZ airport because the passenger in 12C wouldn't shut off the movie. I'm sure some American on the plane would have shoved that dvd player right up his cram hole.

While I agree the guy should catch a knee to the face, why are electronic devices still banned? I don't anyone talking on a cell phone just so I don't have to listen to their meaningless conversations, but come on, Ipods, computers, psp's-these things don't interfere in any way so why ban them?

Critical phase of flight? If something happens, will those paxs be ready to evacuate, get off the plane safetly etc.... Only a guess however....

Good for the CA for having the balls to do the right thing. Sadly, there are some CAs who don't want to act like CAs and leave other crewmembers twisting in the wind. Not sure if it's because they're wussies or don't want the headache/paperwork, but it's frustrating just the same.

And there are FAs that flat out suck.

Such as the FAs that every flight and I mean every flight, give a report how there are so many jerks in back that have to be told 10 times to do whatever. The same one that chews passengers out when they walk out the door. I even had one disagreeable witch, pull out a card on the ground, because a passenger she had jumped all over, in her own words "refused to look at me". Even though the guy was in full compliance at this time, she wanted him thrown off the plane, because he was looking away... The captain knew how she was, and wisely, as in Solomonesque, did nothing.

Then there are FAs that never seem to have those type of problems.

I am not sure a FA should be the final arbiter, of who is a good captain.
