Retired professionals to replace pilots...what a moron

Probably written by the guy that came by my school the other day with a log book of 3500+ hours...of Microsoft Flight Sim time...and wanted to drop off his resume for an instructors position...

That has to be the funniest • I have ever heard. :)

If the author named the piece "A Modest Proposal" and it wasnt supposed to be a satire then the author is just as stupid as we think he is.

I think most professionals could fly a plane, be a doctor, a CPA or a lawyer - they all have the mental capacity, however what each of these professions requires is experience.

"NASA researchers have completed a milestone series of evaluation flights for a revolutionary flight control system that could enable future aircraft suffering major system failures or combat damage to be flown to a safe, controlled landing.
The Intelligent Flight Control System (IFCS) research, aboard a highly-modified NASA F-15B aircraft, focuses on development of “self-learning” neural network software for aircraft flight control computers. In its final form, the software would compare data from how the aircraft and its systems are operating with a database of how it would normally operate, and automatically adjust the flight controls to compensate for any damaged or inoperative control surfaces or systems.

So, once again, what happens when (not if) it breaks. I have too many almost daily occurrences of "Huh?" and "Why's it doing that?" to trust computers to do my flying for me. The FMS totally missed a turn one day. I looked down, and I saw our last waypoint as the current waypoint w/ the distance ticking UP. The FMS just decided it didn't want to go to the next one and was flying in a straight line. It was one of those "darn 'smart' airplane" moments.

Excuse my ignorance, but that didn't really happen did it?

Absolutely. No kidding. The kid came in, asked if we had any instrucor positions open and started jabbering at the chief pilot and I about how much experience he had. We could both tell he was pretty young (about 18) and I asked to see his logbook within about 30 seconds of listening to him. He hands me his logbook and it was page after page after page of log entry's like : KPHX to KSFO/B-737/"Level 5 Thunderstorm"/1.7hour

I just burst out laughing....turns out he belongs to a "Virtual Airline" (the ULTIMATE in PFJ ?!?) and they dork around and actually fly routes and are expected to 'work' just like a 121 op, etc....

We told him the sad truth and he was really upset that he couldn't even instruct in our FTD...

No joke.

Regular airplanes try to kill me daily, adding complexity only makes the problem solving harder. Anybody that thinks they can just jump into a plane and hit the "Newark" button is pretty off base. Heck, my 20 hour primary students can't do much more with the GNS 430 than tune in the CTAF and they're some pretty bright guys! I don't expect somebody to really understand complicated avionics, and more importantly their application and use in the system, until they have a few hundred hours. Even with a lot of instrument students I think they know enough to get by, then you get into the system and really find out what operating out there is like.

That is one of the funniest things I've ever heard N442NM!!

Have you ever had to deal with someone where you don't even want to try to be nice or logical with them, and they are so dumb that you can't be mean ?

This was that moment...

422, please, oh god please tell me you made him cry.....

Considering most CFI's are more or less independent contractors, I'd have hired him and said, "Ok Timmy whenever someone calls for instruction on a virtual 737, that students all yours, mm'kay?"

That's pretty bad...

On that note, I had one guy come in telling me he would do a private in the absoulete minimum time because he came in second in some kind of RC plane contest.

now that would be fun to see!

Are you actually serious? I really wouldn't be that surprised! Wow.

Ok, that's awesome. I wish I was there. One more question though, was he a pilot? Did he have a CFI certificate? Uh...., it's just.....um, yeah, I don't know what else to say. Unbelieveable.

No. He could walk. That was his only qualification as far as I could tell.
