Rerouting for WX (pt 121)

What is the process for 121 guys to get a new routing if there is bad weather along the route of flight? Look at your onboard radar and pull out the charts and see what the way around it is, then ask ATC to amend it, or does dispatch generally try to keep an eye out and stay one step ahead of the captain to get a new routing away from the bad stuff? If you get a new routing, do you have to get a new release from dispatch, or only sometimes, say it's a dramatic rerouting that would obviously require more fuel.

Part 135, not 121, but this was us yesterday. ATC and us were the only ones involved in the conversations:

(Obviously the radar picture doesn't exactly match up time-wise to the aircraft track, but you get the idea.)

Depends. If you're on the ground and there is a line of weather that requires a different route dispatch will just plan that for you, file that flight plan, and give you the appropriate fuel numbers.

If the weather is spotty like in SteveC's picture, they'll just give you some extra contingency fuel for deviations.

If you push and ATC closes a departure route, sometimes they will work on your reroute. If it is significantly longer you will have to communicate the new route to dispatch so they can run your fuel numbers again.

All of the above, depending on the situation.

Just go VFR at 17,500 and don't talk to anyone...it's much easier to nap in the cockpit when ATC isn't chattering in your ear the entire time.
