Ok, so I am considering doing the 121 thing for a while to give it a chance. i have never really wanted too, but i am willing to try it because i can't really come up with any good reasons why not too, at least try it that is. I may not make a career of it, but like i keep saying i would like to try it out. I always saw myself going 135 freight and i might still, but i figure now is the time to try the 121 gig w/ my hours and where both me and my wife are now with no children or really any ties

So between these 2 companies, which would be better to apply too, based upon whatever it is that you guys base these things on. I am trying to figure out the 121 thing.

thanks

Oh no - Buick. How did we lose you?
haven't lost me yet, but i won't meet the 135 mins until nearly april now due to all the crap weather and i just haven't been working for really the last 2 weeks. i refuse to go work for 7/hr, even if it is only for 2 weeks, i won't do it.

but i would someday like to get to UPS/FDX/ABX or something in the corporate realm and i am unsure of how i can get there by flying a Van (although it would be hella fun!) the problem for me lies in where do i go after freight? sure Airnet has the Lear which i would love, but it looks like in the Airnet system it is either a Prop or a Jet base, there aren't too many that have both, which doesn't work with my wifes career, she can't really just get a job and in 1yr be gone for another

i am still confused on what factors to use to decide between 121 operators to apply too, i think no matter what i am going to try and move to the base because commuting for reserve and a crashpad sounds like a PITA

I certainly understand that.

 If it's multi time your looking for we do have one or two props that aren't a Van... ;)

True - if you want to move up you'd have to move, which can be tough on a working spouse, for sure.

nope not multi time, more of the working in a crew in a bigger airplane time. Baron, Cheyenne, and Van don't get that :( so that is where i am stuck, where do i go from there?

yeah, and my wifes career since i can't commute to work (not that i want too anyway, but i would if i had too) she will be done with school soon so i need to make a decision soon

Simply, you move up to the Lear, or you move on. From the props at Airnet people have moved on to corporate, charter, or the regionals. From the Lears at Airnet, people have moved on to the majors, bigger freight outfits, and the better fracs. Some have stayed with the company for years.

However, if you really need a commutable job, it sounds like you need the regionals.

i don't want a commutable job, just curious about what my options are. i would like to know where all these job postings are at (like corporate, etc)

i would really like airnet because i have always wanted to fly the lear, i just don't like the fact i would have to move if i really want to upgrade to it :(

I personally would steer clear of 135 freight. I did it for a while and didn't see anyone leaving for anything other than the regionals. I lucked out and landed an awesome corporate gig and was able to leave without taking a pay cut. I ran into a caravan pilot a few months back who was talking up all his hopes and dreams to go to FedEx and planned on doing so with his 1000hrs TurbinePIC in the van. I had to snicker a little.:laff:
Just because you flew some boxes dosn't mean that UPS wants you more than a pax 121 guy with turbo-jet and glass experience. You will be competing with 4-5000 hr crj captains who have been waiting in line for a while now.
Corporate is all about who ya know. Period.
Apply to both dude!
Good luck

Even if they go to the regionals after freight they're (very generally speaking here) bringing more to the cockpit than your jet transition course guy is.

They won't be the 121 FO posting excitedly about their first experience near t-storms, moderate turbulence, icing, and an approach to mins all the while 50+ paying passengers are in the back with no idea that this is the first time the guy in the right seat has seen conditions like that.

For the experience alone, even if you go to a regional after, freight is worth it in my opinion.

:D didn't even need freight for those experiences

Agreed. However in BuickCFI's case in this day and age why give up senority to end up at the same regional 2 years from now? He is not a jet transition guy, he has more to offer to a 121 cockpit because he has the TT. The doors he wants opened can't be opened with just freight so why waste the time stopping there? Is it good experience yes. Why did I do it for so long? Money and waiting for the right regional. Who cares whether he sees heinous wx in the right set or by himself? In the end he will have to ride shotgun to get to his goals any way. I'm speaking for his situation only. Don't get me wrong I love it if I have an FO with freight experience.

Absolutely. I was NOT referring to Buick at all. I was speaking very generally, and was responding to the poster who I quoted. Nothing wrong at all with Buick going to a Regional.

Hey, don't get me wrong dude. I did my frieght time and am a better pilot for it. I'm not for the 250 guy to go out and sit right seat anywhere (135 or 121). Being a CFI is the experience everyone needs before they try to handle the decisions that the rest of us have to make.

yup, which is why i haven't applied to anywhere as of yet. i am coming up on 1200TT and i am not starting to feel ready to be sitting up front in a more serious commercial situation, whether it be 135 freight in low wx, or in front of 50 pax. i don't see how the guys with 300TT or less can want to do it. that is a hell of a lot of responsibility, and aviation is no joke, people die when mistakes are made.

You probably know this, but at this point you just have to do it. You are probably very ready to do either, and just need to make the leap.
