Republic PHL or LGA.Pros and Cons...

Thanks for responses on my previous posts...

Can anyone give me some realistic pros and cons of PHL or LGA base?

(The commute is no factor, as I am midway between the two, so the drive is about the same)

Been based at both. I would prefer LGA only because I'm 20 mins away, but PHL is good as well. Both are money makers, LGA more so than PHL. LGA will def have more ground stops and flow than PHL. Maybe I've just gotten lucky in my 5 months in PHL, but never got delays anywhere CLOSE to what I did in LGA. LGA has slightly better rampers and I used that term lightly. Honestly, PHL would be an easier drive if your somewhere in the middle of Jersey. You will hate paying the tolls to LGA and the traffic will drive you mad after a long day of flying. PM if you have questions about RAH or the bases.

PHL...go with the 170 base. You dont want to be on a dying airplane. YOu could be stuck on the bottom of a list with crappy trips for a loooong time.

Go where you want to be. Don't think the 145s are dying here any time too soon. Plus its one seniority list so as soon as you can hold captain at RW or S5 you can move on over.

2500 hours TT and I can't remember how much time in company AC. Flew with a November 06' hire that was just finishing up his high mins as a CA.

I agree with Train pick a base where you will be happiest not because of what you will be flying. If they do just decide to up and get rid of the 145s (half our fleet) at once then they will probably furlough and that will be based on the seniority list and it won't matter where or what you are flying.

hmm.. lots to think about

Just a note. There has not been talk of getting rid of the 145s all at once. It is true that Bryan Bedford (CEO) wants to get out of the 50 seat business and fly 170/175/190/195s but this he admits will take years to accomplish. The first to go will be the CRJs and the 135s over the next few years. I do realize this is aviation and all this could change overnight but the 50 seaters at Republic will be around for a long time. If Im still here when we have no more 50 seaters I will be pretty upset. Plus AA and Continental will have to let go of scope before we can be all 170 and larger aircraft.

i am hoping to get the 170, but not looking forward to sitting FO for long. i know the pay moves up pretty quick but it tops out after 3 years and that sucks, i guess that means i really shouldn't be an FO for longer than 3 years? see, these are the things i just don't understand about this industry

Well....

Lots of great points of view...very helpful, thanks to all. Having been in the regionals before, I fully agree with the "live close to your base" philosphy. Commuting by air is just the worst. It's a different job when you can drive back and forth to work.

Honestly , LGA would be a bit easier, but PHL is only an 1 hr 15 min drive, and even less on the train. I opted for PHL over the 40 min drive to LGA because I assume the lines are better (longer flights= less flights in any one day???), the aircraft is something new for me, andI could always upgrade back in to the 145 at LGA later on.

Also....can anyone maybe email me a copy of a PHL 170/175 line so I can get an idea of what the trips look like? PM for my email address.....

Thanks

See you on the line....

He's gotta be willing to lose all the CAL flying, then. I highly doubt mainline CAL is gonna relax that 50 seat jet scope anytime soon.

I hope RAH NEVER gets 190/195s.

Those planes don't belong at outsourced companies.

I would put money on RAH losing their CAL business if they go all 70+ seaters. There is no reason now for the CAL NC to give up scope. The pension is already gone, and they kept their scope during the concessionary contract.
