Republic letter to Pilots

Apparently I have to spell the word lobbyist. I thought I was being funny apparently petey doesn't think so.

My comedy is lost on plebians (channeling my inner Niel Tyson).
Aww, come on... don't be so serious. My area of expertise is being overly literal. It's the internet, of course I think it's funny.

Lobbyist includes us, you know. Just because we're not some professional full-time ass-kisser doesn't mean when we swamp Congressional offices with letters it doesn't matter.

The problem with American isn't that the people don't have a voice it's that they're not willing to speak loudly enough to be heard.

Its like my grandmother used to say, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." If we want something done, its time to get squeaky and speak up.

I guess their grand plan is to take the leases of the Mesa 170's off United's hands? Doesn't Mesa start getting these planes real soon anyhow? Seems a bit ambitious. You guys are dangerous...:sarcasm:

Well, the deal is already inked and I can't remember the extra details... but I believe Mesa's agreement is for xxx airplanes with options for xxx more. I think we're going after the options, the truth is its United flying, they can do what they want with it. I don't know the timetable either, but Mesa is building they're 170 program from the ground up, ours has been operating for years. I don't have any beef with Mesa either, its the just the regional shuffle.

Im holding my breath for the ALPA PAC.

Love it or hate it, ALPA PAC is going to be a lot more effective than all of the angry emails to your congressman.
It's just that I don't believe we would be able to raise the money needed vs the major airlines to buy the votes we need. I think they'd give it an honest go, but the ALPA Pac would need a huge groundswell of support translating to lots of dough. That seems equally unlikely.

With how well they've done for the regional industry as of late, they are about as useful as tits on a bull. See said email about a "pilot shortage.". If there truly was one, you wouldn't see Big Orange still asking for guys to pay for their own type, or require them to show up with it on the 135 side. It's a pay shortage to attract qualified pilots. And ALPA hasn't done anything for that. All the major players have made tremendous profits. It's come time to pay up, or restructure. And fast!

What is happening now is exactly what I have been talking about for the past 3 years.

I've said that 2 regionals will shut down in 2014 because they will not have enough pilots. That is exactly what is going to happen. Economics have finally come home.

A pilot can not invest $250,000 and several years to get his training and his ratings and his 1500 hours and then go to work for $20,000 a year. The numbers just will not work even using airline math.

It's time for the industry to get real.

I used to say a starting pilot should make $50,000 a year.

I've now changed my mind and believe a starting pilot should make no less than $70,000 a year.

Follow the dollars. Take a quick gander at the heaviest contributors to the PAC.

Oh, there is no denying that. The regionals don't have much to contribute. And it just goes to show the true intent of APLA PAC. To make money. When unions need end or at created, that wasn't their purpose.

Holy schnikees.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A former Republic Airlines pilot has pleaded guilty to threatening to torture and kill the company's CEO and his family.

The U.S. attorney's office says 37-year-old Matthew Richard Walker, of Faribault, Minn., entered the plea Monday in federal court in Kansas City.

Prosecutors said one threatening letter was discovered in August 2012 in the cockpit of an aircraft at Reagan National Airport in Washington. Four identical letters were later discovered on planes in Washington, Charlotte, N.C., and Kansas City, Mo., as well as aboard an aircraft en route from Reagan National Airport to Indianapolis International Airport. A fifth letter was discovered in the Kansas City airport's crew room.

Walker faces up to five years in federal prison without parole and a $250,000 fine.
Uh...:ooh:

Hvymetaldrvr said (in part):
...Word is we're gunning for some of the Mesa 170 flying, us being better staffed may be the deciding factor....

Hope springs eternal.

Say what you want about JO being the reincarnation of Frank Lorenzo, the man does learn from his mistakes. He's filling classes with happy people, and he knows how vulnerable Mesa will be if they screw up service when they introduce the new Embraers this summer. They've actually been - gasp - planning!

You do realize that ALPA and ALPA PAC are two different "coffers" of sorts, yes?

I mean you can if you want to, but you can't both not contribute to a PAC and then complain how it's not representing your interests, but you'd like them to.

Plus, it's a great bully pulpit. I had a "problem" with someone on the MEC level and once I threatened to pull my PAC contributions, phones started ringing.
