When I was in college I worked for Performance Aircraft of Hayward. They were a Mooney dealer and flying club. We had a number of Mooney's for rental, mostly M20Js and M20Ks. There was a 5 hour checkout requirement for insurance. The airplanes were quite popular and stayed pretty busy. I taught a guy to fly in his own M20K that was leased back. Soloing him in a Mooney was a bit nerve wracking, but he did it okay. We also did a fair amount of commercial training in the Mooney.
Since those days I have rented a Mooney 252 out of Carlsbad. With 600 hours of Mooney time it only took me a 1 hour checkout, but I think they wanted 5 for people without previous Mooney time.
The Mooney is a great cross country machine. The M20J is my favorite since it sips 8 gallons an hour while cruising at close to 160 KTAS.
I'd be reluctant to lease out any of the turbocharged models as many renter pilots just don't have the touch to keep the engine warm in the descent which would lead to significantly shortened TBO.
