Renter's Insurance for Alaska Residents

Do those of you who rent aircraft typically self-insure, or just accept that rates for Alaskan renters is much higher? I received quotes from both AOPA and AVEMCO (minimal bodily/property, $5000 aircraft damage liability) and what would cost a lower-48 resident $180/year costs an Alaskan over $400/year.

Read the fine print on the AOPA, there are lots of exclusions, dirt strips, etc. I used AVEMCO when I leased a friends plane and no hassles on playing out after a beach incident.

Were you the guy who landed on the beach in New York?

If you are a CFI and a NAFI member AVEMCO and Falcon insurance offer very affordable policies through NAFI ($40/year membership) that cover anything you want to do in Alaska up to (I think) $100K hull.

Wait a sec, where you gonna be in AK?

I'm currently out of state finishing up my degree, but in five weeks I'll be headed home to Anchorage. I'll most likely get a job out in the bush, but for the purpose of aircraft rental I'm just looking at Anchorage.

What does the typical renters policy cost with and with out the NAFI discount? Also, can more than one person be covered under the same policy?

I've never bought a renters policy without being a CFI. I used to use it for instructing in clients airplanes. As far as I know there is no NAFI discount, its just a policy specifically for NAFI members. If I remember right I paid about $600/yr for $45,000 hull and $250,000 liability plus $50,000 a seat. Something like that but dont quote me on it. It also covered me just renting an airplane and was good for floats and off airport stuff too.

Wow... to revisit this thread, I just discovered this. I was going to renew my renter's insurance to do some flying down here in the lower 48, but now that I have an Alaska home address, apparently it would cost me over $1200/year, where it used to be <$300.

I guess I'm kinda screwed... no lower 48 rentals for me, if they require renters insurance. :<

Use a different address. I use my parents all the time for companies not understanding Alaska.
