Did a search but didn't really find the answer to my specific question.

What is everyone's favorite online CFI renewal program?

Also, does it give you the ability to start and stop the program if so/not then what is a reasonable time frame to complete the program?

Yes, that is the only reason I am using it.

The program is a complete joke, just a copy and paste from the FAA publication, and the time requirement thing is really frustrating. But whatever hoops I have to jump through
 
I used the AOPA/Jeppesen last time. It's not a one time fee deal, but I didn't have to goto the FSDO or anything, and there's no time requirements. So when I was done, I just printed everything out and sent my stuff in, about 3 weeks later got my plastic.

This is what I did. I was usually sitting in my recliner, enjoying an adult beverage, watching tv and hitting the next button as fast as I could. I finished up rather quickly, printed off the paper work...and it sat on my desk for two months. Finally sent it off last week.
This is the second time I've used this service. I am satisfied.
(I swore I'd never give A.F. my business again. Did the CFI/CFII program and was beyond disappointed. I showed more prepared than their program could have done. ADS location 2005)
 
I've been using the american flyers online firc since 2001. It's poorly edited, the time requirements are annoying (though probably some kind of FAA requirement), and some of the quiz questions are worded so badly that there are multiple correct answers. Having said all that, I paid for it once and it always works for me. This time I did the whole thing on an Ipod touch. It would work great on an iphone if you have one. www.americanflyers.net is where to get started if you want to try it.
 
I have used the AOPA/JEPP one in the past and have been pleased with the results. Now I just go to the FSDO to renew because of my job but quite honestly in todays age..the CFI renewal clinics on weekends are in my opnion the way to go.

Where else can you meet a large group of people that just quite possibly may contain someone that is looking for someone just like you to fly their airplane?
 
American Flyers. $130 for life.

Did mine about 2 months ago, had my temporary within a week and my plastic in a month. Pretty easy too, but still learned something

it isn't one time free. it's pay once and all subsequent renewals are free. the time i paid, i felt ripped off. the couple of times i've used it free, i felt i got what i paid for.
 
The last time I renewed I used Gleim. I was in a bit of a time crunch due to other things going on, but it was fast, user-friendly, and easy. I did it all at a leisurely pace in 3 days.

This time I am thinking about the American Flyers program (solely becuse it is free the rest of your life) but am concerned about the "mandatory" study times. I guess you can just leave your computer on while you do something else to tick away the time????

no. not sure what the time period is, but you have to click something every so often or the clock stops.

best bet is a dual monitor setup.
 
i did mine a few months ago using aopa/jepp. apparently theres some kinda glitch with the version of firefox i was using, causing the timer not to work, allowing a dis-honest person to just click through and take the quizes.


of course i didnt take advantage of that...

I just complete an 8710 and have an inspector sign it.... it's amazing what the FAA will do if you simply ask. Inspectors have the authority to renew your CFI without any recurrent training (and without giving you a checkride). I'm sure they have internal guidance on when they can do this but some of them I have run across are pretty liberal about doing it. At 2 of the 3 airlines I've been at, the inspectors in the POI office would renew CFIs if you were a Captain. My last few renewals I've done were done by inspectors based on my activity as a sim instructor - just fill out an 8710, have them sign it, and **poof** - you're good for another 2 years. It's worth asking about, worst they can do is say no.
