Removal of 'Circling approach - VMC only' restriction on ATP

Welcome aboard the Washington State Ferries
Resident wizards,

What sort of training and checking would be required to remove the "CIRC APCH - VMC ONLY" limitation from my shiny new ATP certificate? (I'm thinking a few training, circling approaches followed by another practical test in which the circling task is checked.) We don't have a simulator at work that's certificated for circling, and when we do circle in the Brasilia it's really just a descent to visual conditions followed by a visual approach, so both my ATP and my EMB-120 type were issued with the above limitation. I know for the type rating limit I'd have to lay a large amount of money on someone to borrow a Brasilia, but for the certificate itself a Seminole should suffice, right?

Thanks.

Would doing a checkride for a single engine ATP remove the circling restriction from a multi engine ATP?

Just curious, why do you even care to remove it?

This may not be the case, but are all of his multi engine privileges limited to that restriction now?
Also he might want more options than just the airlines. I know some people who work for the regionals and are typed in something and every now and then get a trip on the side for some extra money.
Where I work such a restriction might as well mean you don't even have an ATP.

To remove from just your ATP, you need to circle in a single or multi of any type with a DPE. To remove from a type rating, then it has to be in type and it will remove it from both. Panam in FL advertises being able to do this with any of their sims for a range of types but I don't think the brassila is one of them.

If he has what I have on his certificate, it means that he cannot circle below VMC while IN TYPE. In other words, I cannot circle below VMC in a CL-65, 737, 757, or 767. It does not restrict me in anything that does not require a type rating. I am allowed to circle at mins in a E-120 because I did it for my type ride. But then, why in the hell would I want to be circling that low in a Boeing in the first place? When I first asked about it, I was told, "Don't worry, you'll never be circling that low with passengers."

Why would you need to remove that? Most professional flight departments require 1000' and 3mi in order to attempt a circling approach, and almost all circling approaches require ceilings and visibility to be above basic VFR. Hence you're always circling in VMC, otherwise you're breaking a reg or company standards.

Most of the airports we go have circling minimums of 500-600 and 1 – 1 ½ and some of them only have approaches from one direction. That being said the last time I had to circle with less then VFR weather was around 2 years ago in Phoenix at CHD. The ceilings were around 800 with good vis but light rain and 15 to 20 knots of wind out of the west.

How does it work shooting an approach at ASE with the 'Circling approach - VMC only' restriction? The minimums for all of their approaches are above VFR requirements but all of the minimums are circling. Can you even shoot the approach since it only has circling minimums? I am guessing yes.

Maybe in the 121 world. Even our lears don't have that restriction.
