Licensed pilots (Part 61, etc.) may take the Part 107 online test. When passed your results will be sent to FAA. They will verify your TSA background check and then notify you of your results which will grant you a "type rating" (their term not mine) as a Remote Pilot Airman. This can't be issued through FSDO, signed off by a CFI or DPE, or granted by Obama. Part 107 becomes effective on August 29th, so even though you passed online written, you can't exercise those privileges or operate under those regulations.

What can you do? Operate an sUAS for compensation if it is below 55 pounds gross weight, below 100 mph ground speed, and under 400' AGL UNLESS it is within 400' horizontally of a structure, and then up to 400' above the highest point on that structure. Operations within Classes B, C, D and E airspace with required ATC permission, and Class G without permission. Day VMC, line of sight, no visual observer required. Otherwise Section 333 exemption and possible COA is required for night, IMC, BVLOS, higher, bigger, faster than previously mentioned, over people.

Just got a call back from the DPA FSDO. The FSDO has been told they can not issue certificates before August 29th. They advised to call a couple of days before that. They stated that their plan is to possibly have a remote location set up in their lobby or at an office on that date because they have had a least 50 people all call asking to get their certificates issued on that day.

So it looks like that will be a busy day for the Feds. At least they will also not be flooded the ATP apps.

I might do it just to get some new photographic opportunities, given that there's not much new to see from the top of a tripod in the flattest place on earth.

I have my shiny new test results, just waiting to get my cert now. So come the 29th I need to take test results and current certificate to FSDO?

Seems interesting but you have to renew it every two years. I'll wait till it is CFI renewal time and stack this onto it so I have the same renewal month. IACRA should work for it by then.

For anyone in Chicago I just got a call back from DPA and they will be taking appointments on the 29th to get people their UAS certs.

Awesome, I'm going to do IACRA with a CFI on 29th 00:01, timezone permitting.

Might ask American Flyers if their ACR could do it?

If the cert expires after 2 years I want everything falling in the same month...

Alex.

Well I logged onto IACRA at 12.01am EDT - it mentions remote pilot but doesn't have it in the list to select yet...

Yeah, the DPE should be around this morning. I'll try to bug him to fit it in before he starts his rides. :D
