Remote Indicating Compass

So I'm busy studying the gleim for my instrument written, when I come across this "Remote Indicating Compass" thing. What the .... is this?! "Slave and Free....Gyro Pushbutton....Clockwise/Counterclockwise Adjustment." I've never seen this thing in any 172 I've been in.

Someone please explain.

In the mean time, I'll be trying to follow gleim's directions on how to use something I've never seen before.

You'll use one of these things to slave an HSI so you don't have to constantly keep resetting the DG. The slave/free, clockwife/counterclockwise crap has to do with resetting the thing if it's off. Some HSI's also have a fast slave mode. It's actually pretty handy, and after you get used to flying with an HSI that is slaved you get lazy with setting regular DG's (or at least I do).

So these things are only found in cockpits containing an HSI?

You're not going to fly Skyhawks forever!!:p

All you have to do is avoid companies with lots of HSI's. Then, you won't have that problem!!

Ok, I'm beginning to understand this now...except for the "slave" part. I'm assuming this is meaning correcting it from gyro drift?

Could someone perhaps post a pic of an actual HI accompanied with this RIC component? I can't seem to find one online.

Yup. The Bonanza's I fly have a 'flux detector' in the left wing which detects the magnetic fields. It then 'communicates' with the remote gyro, and provide a signal which is indicated on the card on the face of the HSI. So really, all the slaving function does is correct for precession and keeps the HSI aligned with the magnetic fields (which should be aligned with your compass).

You can see the thingie that you're talking about under the red switch that is just below and to the left of the turn coordinator. This is only one way to do it, though.

As far as the remote compass, there's a good picture and description of what a flux gate compass is and how it connects up to the HSI on page 3-14 of the Instrument Flying Handbook.
