Reminders to close your flightplan

MikeD gets my vote. If already talking to ATC stay with them, but if you are out and about keep handy the local ATC Freqs., it is much better to call up XYZ Tower and tell them your plight exspecially if you are referencing local land marks. The local controller will also have local Police and Fire numbers readily available. If you go to 121.5 you will reach every monitoring facility within earshot, and it could be initially more confussing.
As far as transponder squawk I would maintain the current setting if assigned by ATC, if again you are out doing airwork, then using the appropriate emergency squawk is appropriate.

Just my opionion.

We had a recent engine out praire landing here recently and they just stayed with ATC and squawked the code already in the transponder, it worked great. BTW, the CFI was with a PPL student and the landing went great, no damage to the aircraft from the field landing.
