Well I have put my bid in for a transfer to the ramp in Baltimore. I'm currently working the ramp up in BDL for Southwest. With a ton of openings still there, I should get my transfer and could start anytime next month. I'm really excited as the BWI crew seems to be a lot of fun and the city is way better than springfield/hartford area. Also I like how posistions are bidded and I never have to do provo again. Plus I'll actually have seniority there. No more closing lines every month with the same days off, although I rarely get both off anyways haha.

Anyone from the area on here? What areas should I look for that are within a 30min commute of the airport? I commute an hour now and it sucks, so I would prefer to live closer.
 
I'm about an hour from BWI, way over in VA. I'm not too familiar with the area around BWI, but Frederick, MD is very nice though it may be closer to 40 minutes or so from the airport. The area around Ft. Meade is a nice area also and is probably not more than 1/2 hour from BWI.

While I'm somewhat familiar with the area ... not so much when it comes to the cost of living in the different suburbs around Baltimore itself.

First, what sort of range are you looking at spending ... that could narrow down some places.

Correct me if I'm wrong those who are in the know ... north/northwest/west of Baltimore seem to be where the more upscale, higher cost of living areas are.

Are you looking to buy, rent? House v. apartment?

Hope the transfer goes through and you enjoy Baltimore. Let us know when you're actually moving!
 
I just got a new job at BWI and I purposely got a place close to the airport. The general aviation side is on the east side of the field, so I kept that in mind. I live 10 minutes from work in Glen Burnie, MD. The area is ok, but it is definitely not upscale suburban. It depends on what you are used to I guess. I live in a house with roommates. I pay $500 a month including utilities+cable+internet for a private bedroom and a shared bathroom.

The area around BWI isn't too bad since it is far enough out of the city. Generally, the closer to the city you get the worse it gets. I suggest driving around and seeing if a certain area fits your taste.

Living 10 minutes from work is awesome especially with gas prices, although they were under $2 in my neighborhood until recently.

I'm looking to rent. 700/m is my max as I am on a rampers salary haha. First year isn't great, but with the added OT I make pretty good money. I just can't wait until July so I can get that nice raise.

According to my supervisor it takes about a week to process, then I'll be given a report date. That is usually 2 weeks or so. So I should be moving by mid January as BWI is hiring like crazy. So they will want me down asap as I'm already trained and ready to go.
 
I got a CFI job out here. I couldn't get much of anything going in Iowa after I was through with ATP's career program. I ended up being a line boy with a $40,000 education. I got fired for saying some things about the boss to the wrong people. I don't think I would have gotten fired if they weren't true ;) . On the bright side, I showed up for work out here exactly a month ago and things are looking promising. I already am getting quadruple the flight time I was getting in Iowa, but sadly that is not saying much.

Several of my "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" Harley buds live up around Fred-neck, so it can't be too high falutin'. That said, I expect there are places just as affordable that would be closer.

Personally, all I know about the far side of the river is that MD has been way to Californicated for me. It's a beautiful state though.
 
What does your pay "jump" to after the first year? I was thinking of sending the resume in but it's is hard to think about living on $9 or $10/per hour!
 
I'm thinking Laurel, Glen Burnie, etc would be a good bet for you. I'm not too familiar with the Baltimore burbs but the good news is that it's cheaper to live in Baltimore than in DC.
 
I'm in MD. Not too familiar with Baltimore, since I'm down near Washington, but the Glen Burnie area is your best bet. I know a couple of good restaurants around there too. Also take a look at Bowie and Laurel. The Northern and Northwest suburbs are the nice ones. There are also some "revitalized" parts of the city which are really nice - but make sure you go visit those first. :)

Shouldn't have a problem finding a place near the airport. No need to go out to "Fredneck!"

It goes up to 10.18/hr. It's really not too hard to live off, especially if you put in some OT.

I'll be down in BWI tomorrow looking for places to live. Glen Burnie, MD seems like the place I should be looking in.

Another quick question, any good flight schools in the area?
 
Hmm that would be a very convient flight school for me. I am short on time tomorrow as I'm only there for the day then back up here as I have to work Wed. But I'll definetaly have to check you guys out when I make the move down there.
