Regionals vs. Majors

I'm trying to educate.

Riding the jumpseat, I hear things like "You guys love PBS, we're getting it!"

Whoah whoah whoah there Sparky. PBS ranges from "The Suck" to "Awesome".

The difference is in the contract language and the system built around it in terms of QC (Quality Control) and the ability to say "Nope, run that shizzle again".

Every LXJT pilot needs to read this, then read it again, then read it again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again. Until it sinks in.

Are the regionals the new career goal? I noticed on APC that 10 year captains easily exceed 60k. For somebody who lives in base and is not
very ambitious, what is the point of going to the Majors to start over again? Chase a bigger paycheck or stay local with good senority? It's not always bout the money.

Wooo! 60k! You can be poor your whole life!

If the regionals are your goal, I'd recommend staying away from flying.

If it was certain that the regionals wouldn't fold up under the demands of this hiring wave, then sure but the constant thought of losing your job kinda sucks away the little piece of mind you thought you had.

Thanks.

I've seen both ends of the spectrum and PBS is nothing more than an idea. There's no single software package, no single implentation, no single contract language, it's basically the "Wild West" and can mean anything.

DO NOT SIMPLY DIVE INTO PBS THINKING IT WILL BE AMAZING.

Thanks.

Nevertheless, it is the lord's year 2013+2.

Great artists, of course, steal. ;)

I don't know what you are talking about, PBS is actually not too bad..

We're all speaking in jest, my friend!

I'm not part of the "Game of Thrones" style "I got hired at XYZ, therefore my god-ceo-king says I must vanquish ABC, so say we all!' :)
Ready to unite the proletariat pilot serfs and take on the bourgeoisie CEOs then?

Thanks.

And don't think that simply because it's not what one is used to, it can't be amazing. There are many vendors out there for PBS. Some serve the company, some serve the pilot group.

It has way less to do with the vendor and more to do with the parameters are that are used and who controls those parameters.

And parameters, that can be adjusted to benefit either side (or both!)

That is kinda what I was getting at with this thread. I have no desire to work for either of the two, but it seems like an endless cycle of starting over until you are old and then you retire. What kind of expenses do people have that they need to make 200k a year? I lived off 10k when I was instructing. At 60k, I am very comfortable and I live like I make half of that.

So I'm guessing you have no kids? And don't own a house?

Also, good luck finding a regional that will be around for the X number of years you'll need to get to retirement. Also, at most majors you aren't going to take a income hit your first year anymore so the only loss will be in quality of life.

But, all that said, if you don't want to move on... don't. You're just leaving more spots open for the guys that are actually hungry. Just don't turn around and complain when, 6 years from now you are still making less than 100k a year, still only have 15 days off a month and your company's future is in serious doubt due to loss of FFD contracts.

Hopefully your regional won't play musical bases on you. Don't be the guy senior in base, staying for QoL, complaining about having to commute for the first time in a long time because they closed your base.

The regional airlines have no control over their flying, so they open and close bases at the major airline's whim.

Truth.

There's always a tornado brewing. You can hunker down in a doublewide (regional) or hunker down in an actual strucutre (major). Both may get destroyed, but you know the doublewide is going to go roundy-round and smash into the ground with certainty.

Good for you. Some of us don't care to live like hobos.

Correct and correct! [emoji4] I'm not 121 so I won't affect anyone regardless. I'm just trying to understand the focus on the majors when it seems that you can make a decent wage and have a decent qol at a regional. Everyone is making good points though, even though I don't know what most of these airline acronyms mean.
