Regional Trash Thanksgiving Jumpseat

What was it our fireworks buddy said, "it's a calculated risk", which in this case as well as in South America, the risk really is more straight up teasing the animals.

I ended up with Thanksgiving off, so I picked up flying over it instead of playing the nonrev game. Hopefully something is open in SMF.

I've got to be the luckiest man in the world when it comes to ESD. "Meh, pop the cover on the carpet."

Truth be told,I've done almost all my computer repairs on carpet and I've never owned any of those anti static straps either and I've never had a problem.

You wouldn't suggest someone work on a brand new, one-of-a-kind electronic device, on carpet, without an anti-static mat and a wrist strap would you?

If it was the new hire at my client's I might. 8)

As for the other they are an adult. I said I would help look at loads. Wow. A lot of hate.

A dissenting opinion isn't hatred, it's experienced advice.

I wouldn't mess with it, personally. I like a low drama period during training because when crap hits the fan during the holidays, it's easier to sell crew scheduling on the idea that I got stuck rather than a flight training planner.

Naturally, the questioner can do what they want but I'm not about to instruct anyone on how to play Russian Roulette.

Indeed, instructing, encouraging or helping someone with Russian roulette (or Russian poker) may constitute murder in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

They may be adults (indeed, I would presume or prefer to assume that this industry mostly hires adults), but that doesn't mean you aren't giving potentially destructive advice should the travel plan not go according to, uh, plan.

I'm surprised that no one has brought it up already, but I don't mine being the first.

You're in initial training, and you are new to the game. I'm assuming that means that this is your first 121 gig. Unless you know that you are a high-speed, low drag, absolutele badass, super pilot.... I, personally, would have my head in the books. A few extra days of being in the training environment without having to formally train could be the perfect opportunity to get way ahead of the curve.

It has already been mentioned that there will be many holidays in the future that will go to the wayside, get used to it early. Word to the wise, treat initial training as if your job, and future aviation employment depended on it, because guess what.

During initial training I wouldn't go anywhere except a quiet place to study.

Just my opinion. YMMV

Excellent advice. Hell, I was experience in 121 when I got on at my current carrier. I still stayed at the hotel throughout the entire training sequence for exactly that reason...great opportunity to reinforce the material, do laundry, chill out, etc... All that without the unnecessary stress of non-rev travel while on probation. In my opinion, and it seems I'm not alone, just skip the family outing and get yourself squared away in the books. Many more holidays to come unless the Donald starts WW3, then all bets are off.

Or, buy a ticket like others have suggested...but I'd be skipping the non rev while in newhire training.

Good luck on whatever you decide...let us know how it works out for you.

For what its worth, I was in training in MSP last year for turkey day. Even at an airline that gave you positive space home and back, I'd say it was about 50/50 on people staying and going. I ended up planning to stay in MSP, but changed my mind last minute and non-reved to see my brother, but it worked out that it was on my own metal both ways and was close enough I could have driven had SHTF.

Buy a ticket or stay, idk if you can buy discounted full fare tickets thru mainline at your shop, but if you can maybe check that out. I really wouldn't want to start my airline career by missing a training event, would be a hard one to explain during interviews in the future.
Good luck!

It is.

And my friend would ask about discontinuity in training.

Man, if I was single I would have done the same thing this year. There was a 27 hour 4 day just sitting in open time at time and a half... That'd be lucrative!

We only get extra coin on the day of, but I doubled up on premium pickup window and holiday pay.

Either way, sitting alone in a hotel on Thanksgiving cause I'm working feels terrible than sitting alone at home cause I have no friends.

I'm at home this thanksgiving, but was on the road in 2015.

Ate some bomb-ass Pho in Boston and shut down "The Tam" near the Commons. My copilot was both afraid of "Chinatown" and dive bars so I told her, "See ya tomorrow! Enjoy!"

No one goes into aviation because they just have to be home for the holidays with any amount of consistency.

The only thing that sucks about working during some major holidays is that reality television obsessed people want to see the drama. As you're deplaning, "Hey, the airline doing anything special for you guys?" "Nope, another day at work" "OH POOR POOR pilot! That's gotta BLOW!" "Have a great day!" "Oh, one day, you'll get Christmas off" "Meh, I'm generally Googling for a bar that's open Christmas day by noon" (blank stare)

I'd much rather work the actual holiday anyway, don't have to put on a show for the relatives you see once a year...and holiday pay.

We don't get holiday pay but I largely agree.

Plus, it's a pain in the ass non-revving and I don't have a lot of relatives worth dropping $500 on for a last minute airline ticket! :)

Lets JUST be honest about it! Ha!
