Regional Trash Thanksgiving Jumpseat

I'm in initial training and new to the game. Need some OG wisdom. I was given 11/23-25 off, and I'd like to get from MSP to CHA to see some family for turkey day. Need to be back in MSP by the 26th.

I plan on hitting the terminal early thanksgiving eve, but my big fear is getting stuck in Chattanooga that friday and missing a training event.

Should I just get to the airport early 11/25? Am I being paranoid?

If you must, then try to leave early as possible and have a plan B,C,D,E, and F. Keep in mind there's usually a reduced schedule on holidays. I'm so paranoid that I honestly wouldn't risk it but that's just me, and anybody who knows me knows how paranoid I can be about that kind of thing.

Besides, better get used to missing Thanksgiving anyway :P

I always purchase tickets if I need to be somewhere. Non-reving over the holidays is brutal. Even with jumpseat access, there are only so many jumpseats on so many flights. I don't mean to be a downer here, but the day before and after Thanksgiving are tough. Maybe try to get back to MSP thanksgiving night.

Thanks everyone. I'll shoot for a flight out thanksgiving night. Family is doing a thanksgiving lunch anyway. My training doesn't start until 1800 on 11/26 (2 days after thanksgiving), that gives me some buffer - if the inevitable happens I can't get out Thanksgiving day and everything is full the day after thanksgiving - then I have some more options to get out the day of training.

Buy a ticket, or don't do it. You're a new hire; you're on probation. For the next year you need to be Mr. Clean (well, you should always be, but definitely during the first year). There will be other holidays; other times to get together with family. Besides, assuming you make it there, you'll spend your entire time stressing about getting back and you won't have any fun.

May the odds be ever in your favor

Check loads and ask here (in the flight load) section. I'll be flying but I will watch. I can see UA and DL easily. Not sure how to look up AA. Friend gets me SWA.

Good Luck!

I agree with all of the above, however, that said. If you want to know about loads on SWA let me know.

Have no idea how much opportunity Chattanooga offers you to MSP. Atlanta may be a good idea but, well, base to base can be a mess.

I think you'll be ok, just remember on days like Thanksgiving, and other light days, there are less flights, so make sure the schedules exist with lots, like multiple airlines, multiple connections, before you commit. Like make sure you have a plan X.

I can only tell you that even with the jumpseat, on a non holiday ATL to MSP and vice versa are very tough on DL. Delta mainline guys will have the jumpseat reserved and boot you out of it. I would probably jumpseat out there, and then buy a confirmed ticket back - i see Chattanooga to MSP for $102 on Delta on the 26th... that's worth the peace of mind, I'd say.

A lot of schedules end early on Thanksgiving day,I think my shop only has 160 or so on the board all day and our last departure system wide is around 2130 or so,and that's out west.

Not sure how feasible getting to BNA is but there are nonstops to MSP out of there too

American all but shuts down on Thanksgiving night, I'm sure others are the same. I agree w the above of not doing it, but if you do, I'd strongly suggest trying to limit your exposure to one leg. Commuting to RJ cities can be a real disaster, flight after flight leaving without you. I'd plan on BNA with a car rental or something like that.

Rent a car!

Probably not the best advice to be giving someone still in training.
