regional reserve

I have a few questions regarding reserves at the regional level. What is the schedule like? Days on call per month? How is the family life if you live away from your domicile? Is it logical to move your family to your domicile?

Commuting to reserve sucks. I would plan on moving if you expect to be on reserve for a while. Typical reserve schedule is 5 on 2 off with 12 hr shifts

At most regionals Reserve is a bad thing, So as you move up the list at your base as newhires come in, or senior to you people leave, youll get a line. You will keep your same base unless you bid out of it, closes, or get displaced. It also varies from company to company based on how they do bidding whether its line scheduled or PBS or something else. I feel very qualified to speak on this right now :), so if ya want you can pm me or fire away another.

I'm sort of over qualified about reserve right now (or so it feels!) At my company reserve is 5 on 2 off 5 on 3 off. Different domiciles have a certain number of reserve lines. My domicile has 7 reserve lines, so you can bid for certain days off. Now, just because you have days bid off doesn't mean they won't extend you or something stupid like that. Basicly, if you get sent out on a 3 day trip on your 4th day of reserve you will be out for your first day off after the 5 on. However it works out, at the end of the month you will have gotten 10 days off. We also have a strange policy where if somebody drops a trip for what ever reason, they can pick it up at any time. So even if you are sent on a 4 day trip, it is possible that you will be kicked off it in day 2 when the line holder picks it up again. On days on you will have one of 3 shifts. They are 5-7, 7-9 or 9-11. (14 hours of waiting for the phone to ring) Also, 3 times a month you can get put on hot reserve. That's in airport from 5-2. Only 10 hours but it is all sitting in the airport. I've actually got hot reserve tomorrow. Grr...

Anyhow, that's what we've got here... pretty similar to the rest of the industry I would bet.

It would truly suck if I had wait 10 hours at my place of employment to, possibly, work on a computer:)

Reserve isn't too bad if you're living near your base, and within a reasonable drive to the airport. I commuted from FLL to BUF while I was on reserve my first month on the job. My experience was that it's certainly doable, but eats in heavily to the paltry amount of free time you get off each month. I'm single and it didn't bother me too much, but I can see where it would be a problem for those with families/kids.

I'd say reserve is pretty nice if you live in your domicile. Aside from last month, I had quite a bit of time off on reserve and was able to get alot of errands done that I normally wouldn't have been able to. It's also nice to know that i'm getting paid to sit at home and play xbox all day. What's also nice about our reserve system is that when you fly over our 3.75 hour daily guarantee, your time above 3.75 goes on top of our monthly guarantee of 75 bucks. Last month I only flew 68 hours but I got paid for 93!

On the flip side though, I run into alot of our commuters on reserve in the crew lounge. Most of these guys pretty much live there for 5 or 6 days straight while on reserve. I'm sure they could get a crash pad but most of them don't want to pay for another car or can't afford a crash pad for whatever reason.
