Regional Pilot Schedules

To all you regional pilots out there, I was just wondering how do your schedules look like on a typical trip. I recently read that a 4 day trips with about 3 days off sounds about normal these days. I know there are some where you have 5 days on or 2 days on but for the most part what is your schedule for the majority of the time? In addition, if you would not mind posting your schedules just to see what one might expect as a regional pilot.

P.S. Please mention the airline you fly for.

I wish there was one answer to your question, but it all depends. Seniority, staffing, contract language, labor/management tensions, and many other variables come into play EVERY month lines are published. How many minimum days off does your contract mandate? Does your contract allow for back-to-back trips? Do you want long overnights and many days off? Do you want high credit time and fewer days off? Do you need specific days off? All these variables equate to what you will bid. There might be lines that satisfy multiple desires, or you might need to compromise for the month. Reserve is a different beast also - you could be flying 90+ hours a month and have only 8-12 days off depending on who you work for.

Yes, there are lines with 4 on/3 off. However, there are many lines with 2-days backed up by 3-days (5 days of work and a hotel room on you if you don't live in base), bigger blocks of time off if you're senior enough, and many more combinations.

Again - lines change every month and many variables come into play. The best mentality to have while being junior is to just roll with it... I cannot complain.

Thanks, I have read through those schedules many times on the jetcareers main page, however I was looking for something more recent and from personal experience. I am very well aware that it changes from month to month, airline to airline. Just for example, I would like to hear what was your schedule for this past month.

But I should tell you that I am just another cube monkey in the I.T. world.... :)

I suppose that could be a downside to this job.

An example of the upside would be that for 17 days in September I had no report time at all. :)

And that's just domestic flying. As the widebody pilots on here can tell you, the super long-haul trips can yield months with 21 days off.

I will ask a guy I know who is a very very senior 777 captain for a sample schedule. It's unreal.

When I first started on reserve, I'd have a DH to DTW right off the bat at around 6 am. If I was LUCKY, I'd have a flight when I got there. More often than not, it was straight to the hotel, released to rest, then a highpseed (CDO, stand-up, etc) that night. Back in the morning, then back to the hotel for rest. It REALLY got screwed up when they'd send me on a normal overnight after that rest, then a 3 day trip right after that. Reserve can get screwy, and you never know what's gonna happen. I just kept my bag packed for 5 days worth of flying just in case. There were the rare cases of having SIX days of reserve in a row, though.

Now that I'm in the top quarter of the pilots in domicile, I can get pretty much what I want. I normally get 3 or 4 day trips. If I get the ones that start at 7-8 am on the first day, NORMALLY I'm done around noon or 2 pm the last day. Some have me done at 6 pm. Mostly, I get the trips that start around 1 or 2 pm and end around 6 pm on the last day. They have more flying in them. As for days off, I'm routinely holding 14-16 days off right now. Thanks to all the flying I've done already this year, scheduling bought me off my last 4 day this month plus a 2 day at the beginning of the month, netting me 21 days off for the month.

My wife has already asked "So....when are you going back?" Kristie, she specifically mentioned that you said that would happen at some point, and she didn't believe you. :)

My schedule this month is pretty simple. I work one 3-day a week with every Friday-Monday off. I started with 80hrs of credit, but dropped a turn to get off at 9am on thanksgiving, so I'm down to 78hrs total.

I'm based in LGA with eagle, and we have lots of day trips and 4 day trips. This month we must have had a lot of lines with just day trips, because I am one of the bottom line holders and I was able to hold day trips with 90 hours and 16 days off. With carry over from october and causing a conflict I will have 17 days off with 94 hours of pay. Of course I don't commute so I usually just bid for high time lines with weekends off. I think I have 2 weekends off and also thanksgiving. Now if I can move some days around I can go to Barcelona for a couple of days to visit my sister.

I got these examples from a friend, old but should give you any idea.

First one is Alaska 737 in Seattle, second is Horizon Dash 8-400 in Seattle as well.
