Regional hiring

I was wondering about the regionals. With as many instructors coming out of ATP going to express jet, and airlines, along with the tons of other flight academy instructors, and FBO guys....how many spots can there possibly be ? At what point can we expect it to freeze up, because they are all full ?

Remember, this is only a rough estimate but I'd say June 17, 2005

I would have to disagree. ExpressJet is really only hiring Indy Air furloughee's at the moment. There are plenty of turbo-prop jobs open out there, people look down on them though.

Example:

Colgan has opening for FO's 1000TT/100ME interviewing now.

Mesaba expected to begin hiring within 3 months.

SkyWest is almost always hiring to the 120.

WOW.....only 400 spots ???? Never knew it was so little of an amount. I thought the regionals were hiring hundreds upon hundreds per month...and growing rapidly....with like a serious pilot shortage and stuff. Sure hope a hiring freeze doesnt come for all of us aspiring in the next few years......

Really, look down on them....I don't think so. Just ask Mrivc, Jdflight, Flychicaga, Doug, I could go on, but you get the picture.

Colgan, I cannot speak of.
Mesaba has been hiring. How do I know...Because I have personally flown with several instructors at my FBO that have been hired there.

I know I asked in an earlier post, but just exactly where is your background? With each and every post, I can draw more and more conclusions, but I really dislike doing that without getting information from the source, so that is why I ask. I checked your bio and all it says is Golf, Online Air Traffic Control.

I would take a guess this is from a reliable source.

And Mesaba doesn't have openings on their website, and they have new routes opening in the spring, I just did the math. So according to them, I didn't think they were hiring.

In general, the newbies are after the RJ, not the Beech.

LOL....i actually took that as "literally"......i didnt see the sarcasm part....my bad !!!!!!

Ya smittey i know most newbies want the RJ..but honestly for me, i'd be very happy with a beech, or saab, or brasilla, or whatever.....they all fly right ?? Getting an RJ would be like maybe just a cherry on top........but a banana split is still good without the cherries

They (Mesaba) are, and have been, and will likely continue to hire until spring (from what I was told there)...just not me.

Also, XJT is NOT only hiring Indy furloughees. They are the majority, but not all.

Smittey, you really need to either get your facts straight, or just stop posting guesses. It's getting annoying.

I have wondered what her background is as well. Seems to be quite an expert for somebody that is a private pilot. I also question the validity of that picture. Am I alone on this?

Eatsleepfly, are you talking about all of the regionals, or just Xjet ? Hiring until spring i mean. When would hiring most likely start up again, if there is a freeze ? And how long do the hiring spurts usually last ? I'm just tryin to get an idea. I'm starting the 10 month in may, so i'd say maybe a total of 2 years for me give or take before i'd be concerned with this...but just tryin to get an idea.

I was talking specifically about Mesaba hiring until spring. Sorry for the confusion. When I interviewed there a few weeks ago, they seemed to imply they were going to run two classes of 15 or so per month until maybe April.

If you a good idea of what was happening, vs. just "doing the math" you would know that for at least the last month or longer there had been a posting on Mesaba's site for pilot applications. The hiring has been ongoing since then and somewhat longer.

You're right there was. I am not discrediting that.

Eat, I wouldn't say their website it factually incorrect. I did not speak with them like you, so I admit I was wrong.

IndianaPilot it really does not matter what the hiring situation is now. You only have your private. By the time you complete all your ratings and have enough time to apply for a regional job, things could change.

After 9-11 all the hiring stopped and people quit going to flight schools, since there were no jobs. But the few who went to school when hiring was at its worst, are the ones who are being hired now. There are and will continue to be jobs. You might have to wait for awhile to get the one you want, but I would not worry about the current hiring situation until you have the time to apply.

Ananoman, i wasnt talking about the situation right now currently...because no it does not really apply for me. I'm talking about a few years from now...the future....what to expect when i am ready. I mean, at some point it has to totally freeze up, and stay that way for a long time, right ?

That's the $64,000 question. Who knows what the future holds. High speed trains could take over or we could all be flying in our own personal airplane/cars

IMO, I think the future looks good for pilots however. With a slew of low-cost jets coming online in the next few years, I think the 135 market is really gonna open up. Regionals will continue to serve the market with bigger aircraft, however pay-scales will remain depressed.

It will no longer be the 'glamourous' (sp?) job it once was (unless you're in with a strong major) but still a good job
