Regarding dorm housing; you should read this

So yesterday I was cleaning up some trash/papers...and I saw a letter from the housing office. It was a letter stating how much I would pay for my single room in Brannon for the Spring Semester (the one that just passed). The ridiculous thing is the amount they charge you for a double as single room. I payed around $1200-1300 for that room for one semester...that equates to approximately $300-something!! Getting an apartment and having a roommate can be waaaaaaaaaay cheaper...it's ridiculous how much you pay for a tiny room in a ####ty building where you don't have any kitchen, living room, etc...
TheShocker and I are getting an apt this fall close to the Union, it's two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a common room, and one garage all for $550 a month. The apartment is in awesome condition. All of that for less than a double as single dorm room.

I decided to write this for any newcomers who are interested in the whole housing thing. It's so much cheaper and comfortable to have your own apartment.

What appts are you talking about? That seems almost too cheap for how close it is to campus.

Also, I don't think that the dorms are that bad, and they're a great place to start out for the first year or so. You get to meet a bunch of people and you're right on campus. Honestly, I think you'd miss out on a lot if you didn't stay in the dorms for a little bit…

We've hung out at this apartment for a while. It's one of our friend's apt, she's moving out to Canada. Everything's great, and heating, and everything else is good. Thanks, though

It's like right next to the Women's Center by the International Center. It's the street that takes you to Barnes and Noble. The apartments are right in front of that frat (dont know the name of it, lol)
 
Living in the dorms during freshman year is a very good experience, however, living in an apartment is cheaper! You really get ripped off by living in the dorms, especially since you have to purchase a meal plan. Best thing to do is University apartments! Me and my roommate paid $380/month together, not each! That also includes water, heat and cable TV. We had high-speed internet through the university which was around $20/month. Apartment was close to campus and the shuttle bus stopped right in front of the building (which was really nice during the winter). Definitely worth checking out.

That'd be a great deal - I doubt it's the cheap now?
 
I lived in the dorms for 3 years. I'm definatly glad I did. I got to know lots of friends and there was always something crazy going on if I didn't want to do homework. Yet it was nice to get out and have an apartment. Yes the on-campus apartments are only $383 per month still including water, cable and heat!

First or second year, you should live in the dorm.

For UND housing, my rent runs $405, approx $20 phone bill (mandatory for dsl use :( which is UND bs) $50 for dsl service per academic year and a cheap arse electriciy bill of $10 ranging up to $18 with A/Cs running in the summer.

Heating is free as you only pay for a fan to push air across the heated water lines.

Once you split all the bills with a buddy it is dirt cheap.

In any other case it is close to campus.

1 min by bike from majority of my classes.

Nothing beats waking up 5 min before class and going there with messed up hair, half concious, and sticky eyes.

Oh not to forget to mention the things I am able to do, and the view I have too. Worth the money!
 
Here is a better idea for what I pay, looks like mobile cabin crap, but the benefits outweigh. Plus I am minutes from the dorms too so people seeking refugee from their RAs visit.

I just love the fact that I have one neighboor to worry about, and I get along with him. Sad part is he moved out so I don't know who is next.

The dorms sucked...what girl want's to go to a dorm room to have sex? sorry...but i wouldn't...anyway...the on campus apartments aren't that bad and they are cheep!

If I were a girl, I'd • myself to the guy dorms. You're the exception. :p I'd wear miniskirts all the time, and NO SWEATSHIRTS god damnit.
 
Man, I remember living in Brannon Hall. I started in Smith Hall for a semester or two, then moved to West Hall (I think that's what it was called--been a while). Ultimately, I ended up in Brannon (room 2B) and loved it--it's was a co-ed dorm!! While in West Hall, I had the single room (you know, the corner rooms with 2, 2, and 1 person rooms). I thought that was nice at the time, but sharing a shower / toilet with five guys trying to get ready for class, hockey games, etc., can be tricky. Man, I had some great experiences living in the dorms (lived there my entire college career). I wouldn't have it any other way if I were to do it all over again. Made a ton of friends and met lots of ladies in the dorms. There's pros and cons to eveything, but the dorms were the way to go thinking back on it and I would recommend them to any student going to UND.
