Recommendations, a discussion

I had a roommate stiff me for over a thousand dollars about fifteen years ago,The guy dodged me for a long time, then came back after about five years and wanted the rest of his stuff out. ( look in the dump about four years deep) that was a fun conversation, with him threatening to sue me for the 400-500 dollars worth of stuff he left. two years ago he listed me as a reference for a job as a sheriffs deputy. I had a great time talking with the sheriffs department about every thing I knew about the guy. drug possession, drunk driving, unlicensed firearms, good times.

If you were a jerk, don't ask, and definitely don't just list them.

So lemme get this straight, you guys are getting requests for LOR's from random people that you only through the internet? Thats amazing. I cant imagine asking someone I only see online here for a recommendation.

And let's not forget the first principle of multi-level marketing! For every successful job referral, the referrer gets ten percent of the applicant's income ... a kind of "vigorish." A guy like Dough, who has developed several form-letter recommendations over the years, has to be making a killing with all of the tens, tens of tens, tens of tens of tens of percent, etc. he's pulling in. This whole jetcareers.com must be the framework of a huuuge pyramid sche-- err, trapezoid model.

But seriously, network. Build connections to nodes, talk to lots of people and become another node, lower your Bacon number. Let people help you bring opportunities in return.

I've received a request for a letter of recommendation from someone I never met and only knew through JC. He wasn't some new guy and I had seen him around for a while. After seeing his post history and dialouging with him I was more than comfortable writing a recommendation for him. The thing he was going for didn't work out for him so I wrote him another rec for a different venture.

Someone on this site contacted me without me asking offering to recommend me for a major airline.

Three other people recommended me for a freight airline-site unseen.

The key is (and there's no trick here) to make a connection with other people just like you would in real life. If you never post, you're not making a connection. If you post and are a D bag, you're making a negative connection.

The key with recomending "one of my imaginary friends" who I've never meet in real life is that you need a serious amount of productive participation here on JC. Just signing up and lurking dosn't cut it. I don't get out to the M&Gs as much as I would like, but I do try.

I handed Spira's resume to my boss before I ever meet him, and he got hired. I also asked Ian J for a reference for AWOCS after we spent a couple of years on here. Even then, it's a case of "I haven't flown with him, but he seems to have a great attitude and knows his stuff".

I have also gotten a troll's resume trashed simpley because of how he acted on this site.

thats great, but how valid is a recommendation if you only know the person through the internet? I personally would never ask someone to write me a recommendation unless I have worked with them, for them, or flown with them. I would expect the same from anyone asking ME for a recommendation. As an employer or HR person, I wouldnt take a recommendation seriously if if they only know each other from a website forum! JMO, but I find this interesting that some of you guys would recommend someone based on what they post on here.

Putting ones reputation on the line is indeed a large placement of trust.

I dont walk a resume or suggest people to my employer, or past employer unless ive talked with you, or had beers with you.

But the webmaster did provide you and your family good customer service on Delta's premiere MD-90 to Seattle, did he not? :)

That was SO funny! "So you're one of my husbands imaginary internet friends!"

:yeahthat:

There are some people on here I would go out on a limb for and some that I wouldn't, and I'm not afraid to tell people point blank either.

I've also asked people about their current employers and hiring there and they've come back with "Dude! Send me a resume and I'll walk it in!" I really wish I was in a position to take certain people up on that....

But yeah, short version is don't be an ass on here and you never know what can happen. Unless of course you're jtrain, in which case he can make that work for him.

Oh, and Dough, my mom is JFK-SVO on the 28th, you better be flying and you better get her a free upgrade. And you can give her that LOR we talked about...... :sarcasm:

Yes. Just wanted to respond because this was so spot on.

Not I! :) I don't have my Russian visa back yet so I'm restricted.

If you read my posts with the straight faced "I'm completely not being serious" approach of Wyatt Cenac of The Daily Show, with a touch of waving my arms around the room screaming ala Cramer from Seinfeld, it'd probably be pretty accurate for how most of my posts should be read.

The reason it works is because I've met 8 of the people that have posted in this thread, so all these cats know what to read into, and what NOT to read into these posts.

The problem on here is, in my view, the keyboard ninjas that won't show up to a M&G that want to take shots at people from behind their keyboard but won't get out and meet people. If you're a natural born jackass like me (*coughanddougiancraigmikeandwhitedougcough*, that's great, but you've gotta show up to a M&G, crack some jokes (Gonzo), get boldly trashed and wildly out of control (too many to mention), hit on some straight dudes (Max), entertain the masses (Charlie), be a hack (Ian and MikeD) and/or teach my wife how to shoot craps (Doug). Until then, folks will think whatever they want about you, but once you become legend (Juxta), your reputation walks in the door before you do and folks know you're going to be a good time (meaning, you're not Ian or MikeD) and want to help you out.

Ignore everything John just said. He's a loser. In a fight, he would win, but I'd still come out on top. Why? Because I'm prettier.

Another reason why I say get to meet 'n greets. Now if people know your humor, you can get away with a lot more. But if people think you're just a plain old sarcastic Assy McGee, well, you've got a lot of work to do.

If you post and are a D bag, you're making a negative connection.

But what if you're like me and post and are a D bag...but you make positive connections anyway?

I want it known that I will write a letter of recommendation for anyone on the site. And I write exceptional letters of rec. No reasonable offer refused. Prior to asking me, please google and learn the word "recompense". That is going to be key here.

Dough flew my rents to AMS a few years ago. My dad still asks me rather regularly "how's your buddy Doug?"

"Never met him, but as per facebook he seems to be doing well"

Everyone says you're a big softy after they meet you. You gotta try way harder man!

I don't know. I think Waco is a true D bag in real life. Reciprocating engine. Bi planes. What a tool! ;)
