Recommendation Letters

I was just wondering if letters of recommendation are helpful when applying for an airline job? Do the people that write the letters have to be affiliated with aviation for credibility purposes? What about a letter of recommendation from someone that works with the FAA? Could this benefit getting looked at by potential employers?

I got a letter of recommendation from people I worked with at my first aviation job. My boss, the chief flight instructor, and a designated pilot examiner that I sent the majority of my students to.

I use a DPE here in the TUlsa area for one of my letters. While I cannot speak exactly about an airline interview, she spoke volumes about their effectiveness.

A LOR from a pilot at that company is pretty much required for any decent airline job.

A letter from another pilot or fed would go in the "ok, neat..." category. Couldn't hurt...but also wouldn't help much either unless the person was familiar with said person.

Also, references like

Could raise an eyebrow or two....

All that a LOR from Trogdor would accomplish would them fearing you would burn down their thatched-roof cottages if they didn't hire you!

When asking people to write letters in support your application, always ask if they can write a strong, favourable letter for you.

Many people can write a letter, but what you really want are strong, favourable letters. There is a big difference between being described as "a good pilot and nice person" and being described as "a skilled pilot, exceedingly professional, courteous to others, conscientious in task, a quick study, and one of the kindest people I have ever met".

When people write letters of support for you, their own reputation is also at stake. Because of this, only people that have great confidence in your ability to succeed are comfortable writing strong letters of support. Others will only write mediocre letters and those are plentiful in applications. Yes, it helps if the people supporting you are known to the person reading your application, but, in my opinion, a strong, favourable letter from an unknown, credentialed person is better that a luke-warm letter from an acquaintance.

At my airline, absolutely.

Do the people that write the letters have to be affiliated with aviation for credibility purposes?

Depends, but there's no better recommendation that you can have when it's from a person who has been working for the airline you're applying to for a significant period of time.

What about a letter of recommendation from someone that works with the FAA? Could this benefit getting looked at by potential employers?

Wouldn't hurt I guess. Now if it's a Fed that's an ACI, POI with the airline's CMO, perhaps!

LOR's are definately required and you should be building up a nice stack throughout your carrier. When go to an interview or submit them with your app only use a few of the strongest and best written ones. Also try to get one from a senior pilot at the airline you are applying to.

POI = Principal Operations Inspector
PMI = Principal Maintenance Inspector
ACI = ?
CMO = ?
