Rear View Mirror in a C150?

Well, today I was flying and stopped in the office of the airport for a pop. As I am leaving, I see in the maintenance hangar that there is a 150 with what appeared to be a rear-view mirror mounted on top of the panel. Now maybe I'm just having a bad day, but I've seen mirrors on some planes in places to see if certain lights are on and such, but have never seen or heard of one like this before. Does anyone know what it is or what its for? Thanks!

It's a rear view mirror, the 150's I learned on had them, I usually used them to see that the rudder was working properly. It was pretty cramped with two guys, so turning around took effort.

It's for watching for traffic. You're a lot more likely to get run over from behind when in a 150 compared to almost everything else....

I use it to pick my nose while my student is doing steep turns. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do you really need a mirror to pick your nose? I must be doing something wrong.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I like to look up there and make sure I got 'em all. Don't want them to get stuck to my brain. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buck.gif

You think that's slow, try a J-3

Amen, brother! I got behind one of those flying into Sun N Fun. Flaps, S-turns, everything I could think of, and I was STILL about to eat his tail with the prop of the 172. Add the Skymaster and the Baron behind me, and this guy was probably not very popular. Now, when me and my buddy that flew in with me see a Piper Cub, we just groan and roll our eyes. I still want one, though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Only thing I ever used that mirror for was to see how well I was tracking the runway centerline after takeoff. These days I don't really care if I am or not. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif

Hehe - my family owned a C150J (hence the name) with a 150HP 0-320, a Horton STOL kit, and GNS 430 in it. That thing would go as fast or as slow as you wanted it.

J,

We've got mirrors on our canopy rails in order to make checking 6 easier. Or for me, to be able to look at myself as I fly.

I towed banners in a 150 with 180hp shoehorned into it. The nose strut had to be pumped up extra high just to help prevent prop strikes. It had a stol kit and a climb prop on it. Wasn't much faster then a stock 150, but would climb at 2k+ fpm.
