Really, blocked?

I flew with a guy that would, without fail, say "that was blocked" every time we were given a new frequency.

He couldn't hear worth two cents and I think he was too proud to swallow his pride and admit it.

maybe they were on the land line.

:yup::rotfl::rotfl:

it seems to happen around here alot we have so many students mostly foreign sometimes the freq can get jammed up.

I have noticed if ATC and a pilot step on each other the one who calls blocked is usually not the pilot who "missed" the call.

I have said it myself. l have heard call outs from atc heard my ID then someone steps on them and you dont here the rest...I think saying "blocked" is taking less time then trying to explain "someone stepped on you and I did not here what you said"

No I have never used blocked to cover up missing a call when i was taking a nap, i mean using my puter, i mean arguing with the student...:dunno:

Like the "YUUUUR ON GUAAAAARD!!!!!!!!!! GUAAAARD!" fascists.

Ahhhhh yes.... the Guard fascists. I always find it hilarious how quick they are to start yelling when you accidentally call ramp on 21.5. It's like they're holding the mic, ready to key it and start yelling at the drop of a hat. They probably wont admit it, but I bet I make their day when I screw up and transmit "ON GUAAAARD"!!!

Pilot A: "Yer on guaaaaard"
Pilot B: "You're mom's on guard"
Pilot A: ".....what?"
Pilot C: "Oh snap"

I'm not the "blocked" guy...but here's something to think about. In the US controllers are not required to listen to your response!!!!! If they give a clearance and nobody answers because it was legitimately blocked, and the controller doesn't realize because he starts doing something else, now you can have a problem. In Canada, they are actually required to listen to your readback to make sure you heard them....I know, what a crazy concept!

Perhaps a better technique for us is to wait a few seconds after an ATC transmission. Just because a transmission was blocked for you doesn't mean it didn't get through to it's intended recipient who might be a hundred miles away. If it did, and you are a spring loaded button masher, you just blocked their readback!

Just be patient and wait a second or two....if the transmission was partially blocked and you didn't hear a readback, there's nothing wrong with asking the center to repeat the last clearance.

As was said, it's very possible to get bleed over from other freqs, or have com 2 up loud enough that it drowns out com 1. The other problem we have in the CRJ is if the ACARS transmits it often times squelches out the COM 1 freq, in essence "blocking" it.

I was going into JXN the other day and there were planes talking to ZMP bleeding over onto the tower frequency.

Like everyone else said... it happens.

Sometimes... when it's really quite on the freq... I like to just blurt out a random "blocked". Then never answer when ATS queries.
:insane:
