Reality Check

It's good to be positive about DCA, but not too overbearing on the positive. We all know it works and it also works at other places. I've got friends that didn't go to the academy and are CFII, MEI's and got hired with a little over 1,200 TT. As long as you apply yourself and fly daily you can finish in the same time if not sooner than the Academy. DCA just has the advantage due to us being run by Comair and lowering their mins lower than that required by the average pilot off the street. CMR and CHQ know what product they're getting. I enjoy my experiences at DCA as do other people.

How many guys from your FBO have been hired by a regional airline for a position to fly JETS in the last 12 months?

What's the difference between a jet and a turbo-prop?

I know 3 guys from FBO's that have been hired into jets at regionals in the last year, 1 guy from a university aviation program and 2 guys flying turbo-props....

It's happening!! I think DCA has a good program, but it's too rich for my tastes!!!

See planediveguy, lemme be really honest.

Whenever a new user pops up and eggs on some of the old timers, usually I've got to spend the weekend digging around to make sure you are who you really are.

Am I suspicious? No, but having run these forums for almost five years, there are certain behavioral traits that certain people have that set some alarms off.

My best advice would to do your best to settle into the traffic flow and THEN start egging on the 'old timers' after you've established yourself and learned the norms.

Doug,

It is funnyt that I have my name, ICQ number and e-mail address in the open for everyone in this forum... (you can also check www.bikiniatoll.com. I've met a ton of pilots who came to dive the USS Saratoga and they told me that I should pursue this career) and at the same time some of your "old timers" reamain incognito.
Just "Google" - Fabio Bikini Atoll - and you will find me.

My reputation in the Dive Industry stands untouched.

I have nothing to hide and I will be glad to communicate with anyone that would like to hear from someone that had a good experience with DCA.

Lloyd,

From the Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual:

Turbojet: - " ... A turbojet engine produces thrust solely by the high acceleration of air as it passes through and exhausts the core engine."

Turboprop: - "A turboprop engine uses thrust generated by a core turbine engine to drive a propeller."

Afterall this website is called JETcareers.com and not TURBINEcareers.com right?

( Of course you that I am just having fun with that statement...)

Wow! I am a relatively new guy and that makes alot of sense. I guess maybe it's hard to judge cynicism on a message board.

On another note. . . i guess i still question if i took the best route to right seat. I was doing the FBO thing for two years and felt then i didn't have any oppotunities in the future. DCA, or Comair at the time, seemed like the best bet. But in the end who will ever know. Many people on this post have "made it" and most would claim that their way worked the best!

Ah hell, i just can't wait to get there so i can switch forums!

Group hug y'all, we still all fly for a living

I don't know if it means anything Doug, but I've been around here for a couple years and I will vouch for planediveguy. I know him pretty well, he's a great instructor. I actually had him fly with a student of mine a couple days ago helping him get ready for a stagecheck.

I also list my name as I think words from anonymous users don't carry as much weight as someone willing to share their identity. My $.02

He got me...

Of course when I started jetcareers, I was a turboprop pilot, but nice try though!

Referring to my first flight instructor from a local FBO, my experience is that he progressed much faster to Captain of a turboprop than those I know that went to the CRJ/ERJ. Reason he told me is that the Captains leave ASAP from a 19 seater. Will he make it to Delta or any other main airline quicker than those I know that went into a "jet" ?? I don't know nor do I care to be honest. Either one is more than a year away, IMO. I guess my point is, it doesn't matter to me whether I have to give the seatbelt brief as well as the preflight walk around, or I have a flight attendant doing the brief. Both cases, I am behind the yoke, logging time and doing what I love. My preference would be to be in a "jet" with Comair, ASA etc, but can any of us really be picky at this point with the economy. Yes, at DCA I see people monthly going into the jets, does this mean I would turn down a turboprop job if that was all that was offered?? Nope. Both scenarios get you to the majors... errr... CAN get US to the majors.... What's your preference? I took my chances with DCA for the jet.
