reality check q400 ewr

More than half the crews have been investigated/suspended (many times for no reason) at ewr, never mind the fed rides.

I'm in ewr and have been for the last two years and I don't have the slightest clue what ur talking about. Yeah we got a bunch of line checks after 3407 but half? I'd say maybe 5% tops, I'm really confused as to what ur talking about.

Saw this on the cjc thread and didn't want to start drift...

Let's throw a study on this. there's about 140 pilots in newark, so 5% is 7 pilots. The faa investigated 16 pilots for time/duty, so that already is over 10%. (8 were okay, 8 were violated)

Pilots fired: jw, js, tk, gn, fg, tm, rr, a former beech fo can't remember initials, sure I'm missing some more

Pilot's suspended: 2 for hot refueling, 4 for circle manuevers, 2 for starting an ils, 2 for fms problem, 1 for jumpseat problem, 3 for stick shakers (not counting cap that got fired) 1 for putting something on his flight case that he should not have, 1 for deice not (not counting cap that got fired)

That equals 40 pilots or 29%. And surely there is a least 10-20 more pilots that I forget or don't know about. So about 50% most likely.

If you know other cases, let's see if we can get a more exact number. I'm sure people have gotten suspended for other things like missed trips, etc.

That is some good detailed info. How did you get all that or is it G14 classified super secret gray squirrel stuff?

Shows how little I care about where I work or what happens inside or around it.

I fly the plane in EWR and have heard of maybe 1/4th to a half of what you mentioned. I have gotten my scheduled line checks and a non scheduled fed ride (only because he was trying to get home) and a few observation flights.

I havent gotten myself or anyone else violated or fired yet. That is the only stat I care about. In closing, Colgan has its share (large share) of horrendously horrible pilots on both the CA and the FO side.

"Starting an ILS" like when the visibility was too low?

As far as "putting something in his flight kit that he should not have." Unless it was someone else's property, IE stealing, then I would have told them to go eff themselves and thanks for the paid vacation they'll be giving me. Unless I'm bringing it out during flight, whatever it is is my business.

Really? What's the point? All this does is make it seem like it's a bunch of clowns at EWR when it is not. If you get fired, from the examples given, it's probably because you did something you shouldn't have.

I guess what I am trying to say is that the post doesn paint the whole picture.

jesus christ I'm not into whistle blowing but g-damn the media should be all over this stuff. I seriously don't think I will ever jumpseat or DH on Colgan again, I wonder if we can add that into our contract.

Where are these guys getting the stick shaker at?

That takes some talent if it's during the normal realms of flight.

Well one was 3407, the other I heard about before I left was an "infamous" female captain. From what I heard these were happening during approach. I've never flown the Q but apparently there was some sort of confusing system that Saab pilots weren't used to with the speed tape.

Interestingly enough, NetJets cannot deadhead on Colgan.

We can't even deadhead DCI unless it's for MAC positioning. Unless that's changed or something.

I don't think getting the shaker is that big of a deal, certainly try to avoid it but I remember climbing out on speed mode in at a "recommended climb speed" and huge gust of wind made the shaker go off.

I managed to get the PLI to come down for a second when climbing at 240.

I'm pretty sure it was a fluke.

Wow, is that a union thing or a company thing?

Possibly the tiny seats on the -200. Not that the -9 is that much roomier. :) I know I love DHing on mainline SOOOO much more than DH on DCIs. For those not in the know, I hate riding in the back on both equally.....

Unless you work for Super Regional, I could see any of those happening anywhere. Every regional has "those" pilots. Wheels, I'd be shocked if Air Whisky was the exception to the rule. The flight case technically (for us at 9E at least) would be an FOM violation but still a BS issue seeing as there are plenty of guys with "In N Out" bumper stickers that technically violate the policy. If you come down on one, you should be coming down on about 60% of each base. Maybe more. I'm paranoid about snow, so I probably de-ice sometimes when I can go without it. I'd just rather be on the safe side, and hey. I did all my primary stuff in Texas and Florida. I don't like ice and snow. :) It's possible to get violated for a hot refuel and not even know you're doing something wrong. We've got procedures in our book spelled out and separate checklists. Ground station personnel are trained on it, and you've only got the dispatcher's word that he's cleared it with the airport. Some airports won't let you hot refuel, but they don't put it on any charts or NOTAMS. We had a senior check airman get canned here for a JS issue. FMS "problems" are gonna depend on the problem, too. Now, starting an ILS when you don't have the required vis is a HUGE no-no, but I'd lay money on some of our cowboys here doing the same thing. I think I've circled to land ONCE in 4 years in the RJ, and that was because they switched runways because of a wind shift while I was on the approach. Even then, it was still VMC. My license says I can't really do anything else anyway. As was already mentioned, more data is needed on the stick shakers. Did they get it on approach? When on the approach? Did they go around, or did they continue when they shouldn't have? Was it in the flare? I don't know about the Q, but I've gotten the shaker in the flare on the CRJ sometimes. It's not radically uncommon, esp with our company's "Follow the GS but still land in the first 1000-1500 ft" rule. Bring up the fact that simple math shows you landing at 1600 ft on 36L in MEM if you follow the GS all the way down, and you get a blank stare. If it's on the approach and I get a shaker during the final phase, I'll go around ESPECIALLY if it's windy. I don't know for certain if there's a wind shear on the other side of that or not, and it's not gonna kill me to try it again.

the ils was not due to vis, not sure of the details.
shakers is not counting 3407

More people fired: GB, tulsa

investigated/suspended: 1 for putting wrong altimeter setting in ie. 2989 instead of 2998 (faa violation, other pilot in list of fired)

4 for feathering engines in climb
2 for deicing with apu on

equals 9 more, but 1 is in two of the events, so really 8 more

Then there are several checkairmen that lost their checkairmen status, but we won't even count these in the investigated/suspended category until someone verifies that they were.
And people wonder why morale is low....

Never gotten the shaker in the 145. But I have seen the PLI come down during gusty conditions on the climb out. Especially when your really heavy climbing out at 14 degrees just after take off.

Still where is your union with these guys? I know at my airline you have to be a liability or get sick 8 times a year to get canned. They invest alot of money on us pilots and to just fire people for stuff that happens throughout the course of a day of 121 flying is pretty ridiculous. These guys must have been pretty terrible for the company to throw the tens of thousands of dollars of training costs away.

oops, forgot the captain that got suspended for a month and almost fired because his flight attendant was drinking on duty

totals 49.

That is news to me. We took two gentlemen the other day out of BOS to ALB.

Just what I was told by a NetJets guy. Maybe he was wrong.

Just curious, why are we airing all of Colgan's internal issues here in public? I know if any of these things were happening at my employer, I wouldn't be plastering it all over the internet. All this information is now cached in Google, and can be found by any media sources.
